With Chrysler on the ropes financially in the early 1980s, many changes came about, one of them being the introduction of the new Charger 2.2. Obviously, at first glance, it is easy to discern this vehicle is far from what was marketed for street buyers that year. Indeed, this special car hosts an extensive array of aerodynamic enhancements, was displayed at the 1982 Chicago and Detroit Auto Shows, and was even used as a pace car for the PPG Indy Car World Series during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. Beneath its hood, a turbocharged 2.2L inline 4-cylinder engine with a custom radiator fills the engine bay.
The shifter knob displays a 5-speed pattern, while the suspension was reworked with a wider track in both the front and rear, complete with special sway bars, springs and shocks, plus improved braking components. The unique car was originally finished in silver and red but later repainted into the silver and blue it wears today. The major exterior changes include its gullwing doors, the massive Dodge-lettered pedestal-mounted rear spoiler, a slanted front end with flush headlight covers, square rear-wheel skirts worked into special flared fenders, a front air dam and flush-mounted windows. There literally is no other one like it.
Inside, there are period Recaro race seats, RJS harnesses, a roll cage and aircraft-inspired instrumentation that stretches the length of the dash surface. The back seat is replaced by a paneled shelf. Other features outside include the door-blended brake ducting, an AeroDynic roof-mounted flasher, a large Chrysler Pentastar trademark ghosted onto the hood, Dodge windshield lettering and circa-1982 PPG series identification on the lower rocker areas. Though akin to a spaceship in some respects, this car rides on a set of special SVI three-piece wheels. Among the sea of custom cars, few showcase the functional creativity of this 1982 Dodge Turbo Charger Concept Car.
