This 1986 Dodge Shelby Charger shows just a little over 24,200 miles on the odometer and is finished in an eye-catching Garnet Red and silver color scheme. Carroll Shelby’s involvement with 1980s Chrysler products went far deeper than just hanging his name on a special paint job. Much like he had done 20 years before with Ford’s Mustang (and, in another case of history repeating itself, at the request of Lee Iacocca), Shelby took a fairly pedestrian small sedan and sharpened its performance to broaden its appeal to an audience of enthusiast drivers. In the case of the 1980s Chargers, much of Shelby’s work was done to the car’s chassis.
The cars were lowered, rode on stiffer springs, got quicker steering ratios and were fitted with larger brakes. Aerodynamic pieces improved the Charger’s appearance, as did two-tone paint jobs and alloy wheels. While the first versions of these Shelby Chargers were powered by carbureted engines, they were upgraded in 1985 to 2.2L turbocharged and fuel-injected powerplants, producing nearly 150 HP and 170 lb-ft of torque. In this car, that engine is joined to a 5-speed manual transmission to make the driving experience a lively one. Power steering and power brakes add to the Shelby’s driving character.
The shift lever rises into the interior through a small console between two heavily bolstered front bucket seats. The seats at all four positions in the car wear special “CS” embroidery on the headrests. An AM/FM radio provides in-car entertainment, and there’s full analog instrumentation thanks to the Rallye gauge cluster. This stellar low-mileage example of Shelby’s Chrysler connection is accompanied by the car’s original window sticker.
