Looking for a new Challenger? We’re not talking about one built in 2023, but a 1970 model with a comprehensive restoration completed in 2023, driven only 100 miles since completion. Indeed, this first-year release is both an R/T and an SE, the rare code 29 package with the formal back window and added deluxe trim. One of 2,522 produced that year, the SE package gave Challenger customers something akin to the XR7-series Cougar, considered the model’s main competitor. Standard equipment for every R/T model in 1970 was the 383/335 HP Magnum V-8 engine, coded “N” on the VIN tag and equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor.
It is likely this engine was selected since this car has factory air conditioning, not available on multi-carbureted powerplants. Underhood is the dual-snorkel air cleaner with 383 Magnum pie pan, a red-cap battery, manifolds feeding the dual exhaust ending in chrome tips, and the original factory data plate showing Code E, indicating production at the Los Angeles assembly plant. The car also has both power steering and power front disc brakes and is backed by the Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission. This Challenger is stunningly refinished in original FK5 Dark Burnt Orange Metallic, with a black factory vinyl top and restored matching Burnt Orange interior.
In addition to the rear window, the SE package included the overhead console and Rallye dash layout, and the car importantly has power windows, the Rim Blow steering wheel, body-matched mirrors with driver’s remote, and radio with rear speaker control. The outside is stripe-deleted, with the sport hood featuring hood pins and underdash hood release, SE and R/T painted chrome trim tags, and updated fasteners and body trim restored to factory specs. It rides on restored factory Rally wheels and modern BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. The Challenger’s modern production era is slated to end soon. This special example from that storied nameplate’s very first year could be considered better than new.
