Offered along the Windsor series as a 4-door Sedan and on the longer-wheelbase top-end New Yorker line as a Convertible and 2-door Hardtop, the 1948 Town & Country models were the last to feature structural Ash wooden framing for their doors, rear side panels and trunk lids. Vault-like solidity and sturdy, nautical-type hardware were other hallmarks of these final “true” wood-bodied Town & Country models from Chrysler. Priced from $3,420 in keeping with its commanding presence, the 1948 New Yorker Town & Country Convertible was quite popular with 8,368 produced, including the example offered here.
Power is delivered by Chrysler’s “Spitfire” 323 CI inline 8-cylinder engine, rated at 135 HP, through a two-speed, dual-range Fluid Drive semi-automatic transmission to the semi-floating rear axle. Strikingly finished in blue with a red interior and red convertible top, this glamorous and iconic, top-of-the-line postwar Chrysler includes a split front bench seat, an Art Deco-influenced dash layout and controls, an in-dash radio and clock, chrome bumpers with guards, twin spotlights and steel wheels with chrome rims mounting factory chrome hubcaps and whitewall tires for a great look.
