Finished in white with a two-tone red and black interior, this 1960 Chrysler New Yorker is one of just 556 convertibles built that year. The low production figure is largely reflective of the lofty price tag New Yorker convertibles held and the strike factory workers engaged in during that model year, slowing production. The 413 CI V-8 is accompanied by a TorqueFlite automatic transmission, while power steering and factory power brakes make the lengthy car a cinch to maneuver in tight spots. Power windows and factory swivel seats add a level of refinement and convenience, furthering the luxurious and advanced nature of the New Yorker.
In 1949, Chrysler hired Virgil Exner to work in the Advanced Styling Group with Cliff Voss, Maury Baldwin and Luigi “Gigi” Segre of Ghia in Italy. The idea was to create a new image for Chrysler cars that would span all the divisions. With Exner leading the charge, the group created some of the most exciting specialty, concept and production cars the world had ever seen. It was the start of what would become known as the Forward Look design program, largely beginning with the 1955 models. Rooflines were set lower with thinner profile exposure, beltlines were likewise lower and flatter, rear decks were shorter, and tailfins grew into their own.
By 1957, the rooflines were almost invisible, the tailfins had redefined the industry standard and the Imperial was using compound curved glass. The Plymouth ad campaign of 1957 touted, “Suddenly, it’s 1960,” ushering customers into the future of automotive styling. When the 1960 lineup did make its way around, the once very flat siding had given way to more sculpted, curvaceous styling, the fins leaning out slightly and the tips accompanied by boomerang-styled tail lights.
