The Chrysler New Yorker served as the premier model for the company from 1940 to 1996. The name New Yorker Special was first seen in 1938 when it was used to denote the trim level. In 1955, Virgil Exner styling was exhibited. And 1961 would be the last year for Virgil Exners famous finned design, also known as the “Forward Look” models. This year was also completely redesigned with new slanted headlights adorning the front of the car. On the rear of the car, the taillights were relocated from the fins to right above the bumper. This same year, automobile sales boosted Chrysler to 11th position in the industry for sales.

The New Yorker offered here is finished elegantly in black paint that is complemented nicely by a black convertible top, chrome trim, chrome wire wheels, bumpers and whitewall tires. Powering all New yorkers from the factory was a strong 413-cid, 350-hp V-8 engine; the unit in this car is presented in a nice fashion and backed by a pushbutton automatic transmission. New Yorkers came loaded with standard factory options: remote control outside mirror, pushbutton air conditioner, pushbutton radio, electric clock; power steering, brakes and seat plus a tilt-type mirror that allowed you to deflect headlight glare coming from behind you.

The interior presents beautifully and is tailored with two-tone, white and black upholstery matched with black carpet. Swivel seats are also found in this car; this is a delightful feature that eases entry and exit.

This six-passenger convertible had a lovely restoration completed in 2005, which still shows nicely inside and out. With increasing interest of Mr.Exners “Forward Design” models, this one of 576 cars manufactured is sure to be a great start to, or addition to a classic car collection.
