Originally an up-market Chrysler, Imperial was registered as a marque in its own right in 1954, a move that enabled the corporation to develop a separate identity for the cars. In the immediate post-war years, though, the conservatively styled Imperials looked little different from mainstream Chryslers. The latter were virtually identical to those of 1942, and not until 1949 did a new look appear. Based on the Chrysler New Yorker, the new-for-'49 Imperial featured a canvas-covered roof and superior leather and broadcloth upholstery. Its engine was the long-established 5.3-litre sidevalve straight-eight, while 'Fluid Drive' and 'Prestomatic' (clutch-less) transmission were standard equipment.
A Cadillac-style radiator grille was new for 1950, the last year of the old straight-eight. The latter was dropped at the year's end and replaced by Chrysler's classic 331.1ci (5.4-litre) 'Hemi' V8, a state-of-the-art and much more powerful engine. Imperial and Crown Imperial series were manufactured, the latter being Chrysler's top-of-the-range and most exclusive model. A direct competitor to Cadillac, it was manufactured in relatively limited numbers. But unlike Cadillac, which had introduced fins on its 1948 range, the Imperial eschewed this popular styling feature until 1957.
For 1953, the Imperial series was restyled and re-designated 'Custom Imperial'. The marque's stylised eagle bonnet ornament made its first appearance that year, while power brakes, power windows, padded dashboard and central folding armrests (front and rear) were standard equipment on the Custom models.
More than 5.5 metres long, this Custom Imperial Sedan is most imposing and certainly makes an extravagant statement. Extremely handsome in metallic green with cream roof, this ultimate cruiser offers grace, pace and comfort and is guaranteed to turn heads admiringly wherever it goes. Unfortunately, nothing is known of the history of this particular car, which is offered without documents. Re-commissioning will be required following a period of storage.
