For 1964, Imperial introduced a completely restyled lineup. The new look featured sharper, crisper body creases dramatically tempered with flat decks and sides—a radical departure from the Forward Look designs Chrysler pioneered in the 1950s. The fresh styling was the work of Elwood Engel, who took over as design chief in November of 1961. Chrysler felt strongly the direction for 1960s automotive styling was rooted in the designs of the 1961 Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln Continental—cars that Engel helped style while at Ford. The squared, chiseled Imperial design was striking, and luxury car buyers gravitated to it.
The styling would span through 1968 with unique changes year by year, with 1969 ushering in yet another dramatic restyling with the fuselage look. Once again, the new body designs were unique compared to the outgoing Imperials—an exercise that again ignited the interest of luxury car buyers. With a lofty base price of $6,194—around $62,000 today—the Imperial Crown convertible was priced slightly less than the Cadillac Eldorado convertible of the same year. And yet, just 633 Imperial Crown convertibles were built compared to the 2,125 Eldorados—an astonishing difference considering how closely matched the two cars were.
With the exception of one repaint and a rebuilt transmission, this example of the Chrysler Corporation’s flagship convertible is presented in stunningly original condition. Powered by a 413 CI V-8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission, the Persian White Imperial features an original leather interior of Black Plum and an assortment of power accessories including air conditioning, power windows, twin power front seats, front and rear center fold down arm rests and a power trunk release. The Imperial further spoils its driver with power steering and power brakes, and a tilt steering column. A Haartz cloth convertible top keeps the elements out or allows for unobstructed breezes.
Rolling on white stripe tires, steel wheels are dressed with full-size Imperial wheel covers.
