Rolling on its original BF Goodrich tires and retaining its original black paint and callout decals, this 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS pickup shows slightly less than 2,900 miles on the odometer and presents in highly original condition. In fact, it’s still on the historic Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO). Giving the truck its claim to fame, under the hood is a 7.4L 454 CI V-8 engine and an automatic transmission, which lends the lightweight pickup a powerful punch. Equipped with polished alloy wheels, power steering and power brakes, it’s complete with a locking gas cap and key.
The age of the performance-oriented pickup truck arguably began when Dodge introduced the Li’l Red Express and the Warlock in 1978, lending a factory hand to the idea of modified trucks. The gross vehicle weight of a pickup allowed for a performance loop hole in the ongoing emissions restrictions of the 1970s, meaning manufacturers could stuff huge engines under the hood without breaking any rules. This being said, Dodge introduced its two Hot Rod pickups to great acclaim—in fact, the Li’l Red Express would be certified as the quickest and fastest American production vehicle for 1978, kind of embarrassing for “real” performance machines of the time, but the proof was in the timeslips.
Fast forwarding to 1989, Chevrolet announced it would be introducing the 454 SS for 1990. Based on the 2-wheel drive, short bed C1500 pickup, the 454 SS would ride on a modified suspension and larger wheels and tires. Aesthetically, it would use elements from the Sport package including a full monochromatic paint scheme and a bucket seat interior. Under the hood would be a 454/230 HP V-8 with a gobsmacking 385 lb-ft of torque. It would thunder from 0-60 in the high 7-second range, which was astonishing for a late 1980s/early 1990s pickup. In fact, it was pretty impressive for anything in that era.
