Clean-cut and polished in front of a camera, Jeff Gordon helped transform NASCAR auto racing from a regional spectacle into a mainstream sport. His corporate image rubbed some of racing's old guard the wrong way, but even the critics had to acknowledge his immense skills. Gordon became the youngest driver to triumph at the Daytona 500 in 1997 and tied a modern record with 13 victories in one season in 1998, finishing both years as the series champion. He notched a fourth championship in 2001 with new crew chief Robbie Loomis in tow, culminating an amazing stretch that produced 56 victories in seven years. It is worth noting that Gordon ran his entire NASCAR Cup career with Hendrick Motorsports—a demonstration of loyalty in the cutthroat world of top-level racing.
This #24 Hendrick car, chassis number 24-803, was Gordon’s primary road course chassis for the 2013 season. His first outing in the car was on 23 June 2013 at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. There, Gordon worked from a starting position of 10th up to a 2nd-place finish, just behind the #56 car of Martin Truex Jr. Two months later, the car would travel to upstate New York for the 11 August Cheez-It 355 at The Glen. Gordon started that race 28th on the grid, but he managed only 36th place after a difficult outing.
When all the points were tallied, Gordon achieved 6th overall for the 2013 NASCAR Cup season. Gordon also achieved two milestones that year that spoke to the impressive duration of his career: His 700th consecutive Cup start, as well as his 300th career top-5 finish. This car, chassis 24-803, contributed directly to both.
After the conclusion of its racing career, chassis 24-803 was restored by the crew that knew it best: The experts at Hendrick Motorsports, including former crew chief Lance McGrew. As the accompanying certificate of authenticity indicates, the chassis was restored “by Hendrick Motorsports race shop team members, to Hendrick Motorsports specifications, using authentic Hendrick Motorsports raced parts.” The result is impressive both mechanically and cosmetically; as presented today, this car wears the #24 AARP livery appropriate to the 2013 season, and a carbureted Chevrolet R07 race engine sits under the hood.
Few modern NASCAR drivers have had as much of an impact on the sport as Jeff Gordon. While he remains involved to the present day, becoming vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports in 2022, he turned his last laps as a professional driver in 2016—making a late-career car such as this a significant addition to any collection with a focus on American racing.
