From their introduction for 1964, Chevrolet’s A-Body intermediate models were a runaway sales success thanks to their crisp, attractive styling, extensive options and value for the dollar. A major redesign for 1968 brought a sportier new look, with a three-inch shorter wheelbase and long-hood, short-deck styling. The 1968-72 Chevelle and its upscale Malibu trim level remain the most popular among today’s enthusiasts, with legions preferring the 1968-69 models as the best of the breed. These Chevelles also serve as an ideal canvas for custom builds, and this hot Pro Touring-style 1968 Malibu convertible is a very fine case in point.
Refinished in Metallic Gray, this Malibu convertible offers far more performance than its original specifications, with power delivered by a 496 CI V-8 engine equipped with FiTech electronic fuel injection, a Lunati camshaft, and forged JE pistons with Eagle connecting rods. Supporting items include the MSD electronic ignition, Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley fuel pump, Hooker headers, and a free-flowing Flowmaster dual exhaust system. Sending the power to the pavement is a Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission with Muncie shifter, a Centerforce clutch with McLeod Racing hydraulic throwout bearing, and a 12-bolt Positraction rear end with 3.90:1 gears.
Other highlights include power steering, Energy Suspension Parts body mount bushings, Edelbrock heavy-duty tie rod sleeves, an LPW Racing Products axle-housing brace, CPP tubular control arms with QA1 coilover shocks, and a Hotchkis Sport Suspension front sway bar and adjustable trailing arm mount braces. Stopping is via 4-wheel disc brakes with Wilwood front calipers, drilled and slotted rotors, and stainless lines. Under the power-operated black soft top, the Malibu features power-adjustable front bucket seats, Classic Auto Air climate control, a reproduction Fisher Body plate, a custom Autosound digital stereo with Polk Audio amplifier, power windows, and power door locks.
Finishing touches include a front spoiler and staggered 18- and 20-inch Ridler wheels.
