Presented here is one of the very first competition-certified NASCAR "Car of Tomorrow" Sprint Cup road course cars ever built, complete with the original NASCAR certification/registration RFID tags. Richard Childress Racing Chassis No. 214 is the original backup car, assembled and prepared in 2007 by the No. 29 RCR Pennzoil-sponsored race team for competition at the Car of Tomorrow road course race held on June 24, 2007—the first ever in NASCAR history—at Sonoma California Raceway with driver Kevin Harvick. The NASCAR Car of Tomorrow Sprint Cup car retains all of the original RCR Sonoma race suspension, including the original, documented Butler Built seat that was custom made for Harvick.
Numerous chassis number, team number and build date identifiers can be found all over the car. The similarly prepared No. 29 Pennzoil-sponsored primary sister car finished second in that Sonoma race, with the RCR No. 31 and No. 07 teams finishing in third and fourth places. Chassis No. 214 received a final update to the new 2011-2012 Chevrolet Impala SS body style for new sponsor Budweiser and a prominent position displayed in the Richard Childress Racing headquarters lobby. Several photos show the original Pennzoil Yellow paint under the newer black paint.
This model, "Black Bud," is one of the last fully painted (not vinyl wrapped), steel-bodied-style cup cars of the modern NASCAR era, and it has been beautifully prepared and maintained by one of the most respected Chevrolet-affiliated race organizations ever in the history of NASCAR and motorsports.
