For those in the mood for a fun collector car, perhaps this “king of the cruiser” is the answer, as the stunning 1968 Impala SS convertible seen here shows just 21,380 miles on the odometer. The 1968 model release found one major change to this most popular of all Chevrolet full-size cars, as Super Sport could now be had as an optional add-on to all Impalas, including the convertible line. The SS package meant black accenting to both grille and back fender moldings, added brightwork and upgraded interior trim.
This car was marketed by Chevrolet as a full-size model with frills: “18 feet of steeled elegance, 1.7 tons of luxury, and 327 cu. ins. of Turbo Fire V-8 power!” While other engine options were offered, this SS indeed came with the aforementioned 327 CI V-8 engine with the 4-barrel carburetor, featuring an open-element chrome air cleaner and other minor upgrades. Backed by the automatic transmission and a 12-bolt differential, this convertible was not a teeny-bopper’s street machine but a highway cruiser par excellence. Power steering and power brakes with front discs make it enjoyable to drive, while the exterior is finished in Matador Red with a black top and interior.
Unlike the front bench seating in many full-size models, this example has wide front bucket seats and a center console with horseshoe-handle shifter, a Delco pushbutton radio, pedal brightwork and an SS steering wheel. Outside are chrome emblems with exclusive Impala Super Sport lettering, 327 front fender tags, body-length side spear, turned down exhaust tips and well-defined chrome bumpers. The car rides on extra-cost Chevrolet Rally wheels with bright centers, shod in redline tires for a refined appearance. While some Impalas had higher horsepower engines, the truth is that this is a car one should buy to enjoy.
Whether beach-bound or heading down the highway, this colorfully blended Impala perhaps makes even more of a statement today than when it was new—steeled elegance, indeed.
