The Grand Sport Corvette, forever a legend in the history of competition Corvettes, returned again as a street-based option package in 2017. Nonetheless, the example offered here continues the purebred mystique of this storied nameplate, packaging the Stingray’s hot engine within the confines of the more extreme Z06 body styling. In fact, it was intoned by Car & Driver magazine that the 2017 Grand Sport was closest in principle to the Zora Arkus-Duntov-designed originals of 1963 than any of its C7 siblings, and closer kin still to the highly-successful race-bred C7-R competition release than the similar-in-appearance but supercharged Z06 release.
Underneath the styled hood is the LT-design dry-sump 6.2L/460 HP V-8 engine, immensely capable of both jarring speeds and docile traffic use. Backed by the 8-speed automatic transmission, the designers admit that every part of this Grand Sport release was intentionally configured with driving in mind. That includes Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension, the electronic limited-slip rear differential, aero enhancements like the front splitter and rear spoiler, and massive Brembo brakes chosen to specifically work with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
The Collector Edition package includes Watkins Glen Gray paint with Tension Blue fender hash marks and the blue and black interior showcasing special carbon fiber trim and exclusive Grand Sport identification. Also inside, one finds dual-zone automatic climate control, a MyLink sound system with Apple CarPlay and SiriusXM radio, power tilt and telescopic steering column and power windows, locks and mirrors. The outside plays host to additional Grand Sport callouts and unique cues that are a blend of the Stingray and Z06-level styling elements, including the quadrant of exhaust exits centered at the rear, exclusive hood styling and black Grand Sport wheels in 19- and 20-inch formats.
The car shows 2,453 miles on the odometer. Not a car for the mundane owner, this Corvette was created for the serious enthusiast, retaining the same flavor that started the Grand Sport legend in the first place.
