The early success of the Volkswagen and Porsche prompted General Motors to introduce the rear-engined Corvair, a sporty compact that not coincidentally also targeted the Dodge Dart, Plymouth Valiant and Ford Falcon. Sensing latent public interest in a more sporting version, Chevrolet introduced the Corvair Monza, an innovative enthusiast’s car that offered an upscale interior with bucket seats and additional exterior bright trim.
Contrary to the widely-accepted “Unsafe at Any Speed” reputation propagated by consumer lawyer Ralph Nader, the Corvair in general and the Monza in particular were smart-handling cars thanks to revised 4-wheel independent suspension that included a transverse camber-compensating rear spring. This Deep Red 1964 convertible is an outstanding example of the performance-oriented Monza Spyder and is particularly well-outfitted with a Red bucket seat interior, rare power-operated White soft top, chromed bumpers and luggage rack and a beefy turbocharged 164/150 HP air-cooled flat-6 engine, floor-shifted manual transmission, AM radio, spinner wheel covers and whitewall tires.
