There can be a wide chasm between a simple rebuild and a full customization, but this unique 1957 Chevrolet Nomad seemingly bridges all of it, keeping most of its OEM sheet metal appearance but reconditioned and upgraded throughout otherwise. Back in ’57, the factory models were powered by the inline-6 or initial small-block V-8, but this example remains balanced while making use of a 6.2L/430 HP LS3 Corvette V-8 engine. This GM Performance engine package has factory fuel injection, modern electronics and ignition components, as well as a conical air cleaner, and it’s dressed up with chrome engine accessories, including the radiator support.
In addition to its custom exhaust system, there is now an aluminum radiator, A/C condenser and gas tank in this car as well. Backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission, the changes did not end here, as a 2016 Corvette frame and suspension have been adapted to fit beneath the body. This includes polished suspension components and large-diameter Baer disc brakes. The exterior is in a crystal blue with a white roof, retaining the factory-design trim and fluted rear fin side inserts. Inside has been fully redone to a luxury grade, with Procar bucket seats featuring adjustable lumbar in front and a matching rear bench seat using the original-style 1957 rear seat and door panels.
Comfort is assisted by a Vintage Air R134a system, new carpets, a fresh headliner with new bows, a new Classic Instruments gauge cluster in the factory dash pods, and a custom, handmade, red oak center console. Indeed, new chrome, gaskets and seals were installed during this car’s build, and the Nomad rides on modern 10-spoke Corvette wheels and Toyo blackwall radial tires. Driven only test miles since its completion, owning this special Nomad creates an opportunity to enjoy what is, in some ways, the best of both worlds.
