It’s a Saturday afternoon, ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” is on the television and Paul Page is extolling the virtues of 12 race car drivers—from myriad disciplines—all driving identically prepared Chevrolet Camaros to see who the best driver is. The International Race of Champions, or IROC, as it was better known, was the brainchild of Les Richter, Roger Penske and Mike Phelps. Promoted as a motorsports “All-Star Game” on a level playing field, from 1975 through 1989, Chevrolet’s Camaro was the vehicle of choice for the series, and the automaker capitalized on the joint venture with the IROC-Z option package starting in 1985.
Added to the Z28, the package featured an upgraded suspension, lowered ride height, specially valved Delco-Bilstein shocks, larger-diameter sway bars, a steering/frame brace known as the "wonder bar," a special decal package and an optional tuned port injection system taken from the Chevrolet Corvette. It also shared the Corvette's Goodyear "Gatorback" unidirectional tires on specific wheels, with different offsets front and rear. Five years later, Chevrolet elected not to renew its contract with the International Race of Champions, and 1990 would be the last year for the IROC-Z.
This 1990 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z wearing factory-correct Bright White with Gray and Yellow graphics represents the final iteration of the model, and it has only accrued 16,000 miles on the clock since new. Beneath the hood is the optional L98 5.7L V-8, an engine that produced 245 HP and 345 lb-ft of torque when it left the factory, and it is backed by the standard-issue 4-speed automatic gearbox with overdrive. With the optional G92 performance ratio axle ticked on the order form, the car also received heavy-duty, power-assisted disc brakes, an engine oil cooler and a performance exhaust system, all for $466.00.
Tacking on the G80 limited-slip differential added another $100 to the bottom line. The 16-inch, factory 5-spoke wheels are shod in Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP radials, and the factory mufflers have been replaced with Flowmaster units. Factory-ordered with the custom black and white houndstooth bucket seats, the interior also includes a host of analog gauges, with a large speedometer and tachometer flanking smaller oil pressure, voltmeter, fuel level and engine temperature gauges. Air conditioning was also ordered, as well as a Delco AM/FM/CD stereo, making this one very collectible IROC-Z.
