In the mid-1950s, the top-of-the-line Cadillacs were Eldorados, and the best of that group were the carefully hand-assembled Brougham editions reserved only for the most exclusive buyers. The Series 70 1957 Brougham here is one of the mere 400 created in that debut model year, has received a frame-off restoration with upgraded drivetrain components, and was formerly part of the Neil Deatley Collection. A true pillarless four-door hardtop with rear-hinged back doors, aficionados are quick to identify it thanks to the iconic stainless steel roof, quad headlamps and very exclusive trim that made it different from the remaining Cadillac vehicle line.
Indeed, the retail price for a Brougham in 1957 was more than $13,000, putting its cost above Rolls-Royce, almost twice the cost of a similar Eldorado and equivalent in value to the average new home in the era. Beneath the hood here is a V-8 engine that features FAST electronic fuel injection, modern accessories including air conditioning, bright-coated headers and dual exhaust, as well as power steering and power brakes. Very careful attention to paint and trim detail keep the engine from looking out of place in its location.
The exterior is covered in Dark Blue Metallic paint, with broad chrome rear skirting, massive bullet-tipped bumpers both front and rear, Eldorado-only body identification, forward-faced coves worked into the rear doors, and chrome-lipped tailfins. Inside the blue leather interior are posh wide seats, power windows, two-tone twin-spoke steering wheel, and a plethora of options that were standard equipment, such as the Autronic eye and a magnetic drink holder glovebox kit.
With a set of full-size wheel covers, white-stripe radial tires and suspension enhancements as a crowning touch with a nod to current-day operation, this very special motorcar was featured in Hemmings Classic Car magazine (December 2017) and represents an opportunity to experience one of the ultimate luxury cars of the 1950s, or any decade for that matter.
