The Buick Super was an interesting idea in motoring, touting the long wheelbase and luxury accoutrements of the upscale Roadmaster but priced at a more accommodating level, thanks to adopting the Buick Special’s smaller engine. For 1940, the Super was entirely restyled with over 5-inches of extra width. It looked modern and streamlined compared to previous years, and it offered largely the same package as the discontinued LaSalle 50.
Combining the lengthy wheelbase, basic body and standard accessories of the Roadmaster with the smaller straight-8 engine from the Special was a winning sales combination, providing customers with a wide array of features and an economical engine that not only saved fuel and maintenance costs, but was also less expensive right off the showroom floor. After World War II, Buick resumed production and the Super proved to be a top seller, its price point, efficient engine, extensive features and revised streamlined styling winning the approval of many buyers. This comprehensively restored 1947 Buick Super Convertible exemplifies the secret formula behind the Super.
The 248 CI inline 8-cylinder engine and 3-speed manual transmission have both been rebuilt. Finished in light blue with a dark blue Haartz cloth convertible top, it rolls on wide whitewall tires with light blue colored wheels with polished beauty rings and hubcaps. Dressed with fender skirts and the brightwork that helps identify it as an upscale midlevel model, it’s also equipped with dual spotlights, twin sideview mirrors front and rear bumperettes, driving lights and the famous gunsight hood ornament. The two-tone light and dark blue interior is highlighted by white seating surfaces that match the steering wheel and various knobs.
The body-colored dashboard features a clock, instrumentation and an AM radio.
