World War II truncated production for every car maker—very disappointing to Buick, which boasted a restyled lineup for 1942. Often falling behind Chevrolet, Ford and Plymouth, Buick only produced around 92,000 cars by the time production ceased in February 1942. Of those, just 511 were Roadmaster convertibles like this one. Powered by a 320 CI Fireball Dynaflash OHV inline 8-cylinder engine and a 3-speed column-mounted manual transmission, this 1942 Buick Roadmaster convertible is finished in burgundy with a black, soft convertible top lined with red piping.

The body is dressed with a multitude of details, including rear fender skirts, chrome bumpers with bumper guards, the grille, hood ornament, bezels and side trim. The interior is highlighted with metal detailing across the dashboard, an ivory-colored steering wheel and matching gauges, two-tone red and gray leather seating and matching door panels, a Sonomatic pushbutton radio and an in-dash clock. The chassis is comprised of a semi-floating rear axle, an independent front suspension with coil springs, drum brakes and color-matched steel wheels shod with wide whitewall tires, chrome hubcaps and trim rings.

For 1931, Buick introduced the Series 80, a car nuzzled in right below the new, topline Series 90, which shared the larger C-Body platform with the ritzy Cadillac Series 355. Using a shorter wheelbase and an inline 8-cylinder engine, the Series 80 was considered to be a docile, high-performance car for the day, enticing a younger clientele to showrooms. For 1936, accompanying a body restyling and reengineering of the Straight-8 engine, the Series 80 became the Series 80 Roadmaster, which informally became known simply as the Roadmaster. The name spanned through 1958 and served as one of Buick’s largest and most popular models.
