The pressure of personal automobile demand allowed Harley Earl’s short-lived 1942 Buick design to remain in place for the first three years of postwar production, 1946-48, and this wonderful 1947 Buick Roadmaster Convertible features the legacy lines associated with that. This model displays a sleek, low-slung look, stylized with rearward-flowing body lines, and it’s modern-looking whether the top is up or down. For 1947, changes had included the new stamped vertical-slat grille, and within the bumper-guard crosshairs is a chrome button showing the Roadmaster name in red-filled script at both the front and rear.

The Buick crest is fitted in front above this in a separate upper bar, and the words “Buick Eight” are spelled out across the decklid in back. This particular example is refreshed in a conservative light blue, with straight lower-body trim extending over the rear-wheel skirts and chrome lower rocker-panel trim. Under the hood resides the Fireball Dynaflash 320 CI straight-8 with its paint nearly matched to the body tone, and lettered for its application. The sliding-shift 3-speed manual transmission is activated by a column-shift mechanism below the massive original-sized ivory-toned Tenite steering wheel with its crest-detail horn button.

The rest of the interior is a combination of tan and blue accents, with wide bench seats, Bakelite gauging, in-dash clock and a Wurlitzer-styled Sonomatic speaker below the radio that carries Buick styling and identification on the five radio buttons. The top is done in light tan, and the car also has hydraulic power windows and 12-inch drum brakes tucked behind whitewall tires. One of 28,297 convertibles were produced by Buick in 1947, these cars are few in number today, and this example represents a premium design standard that highlighted pre-1950 Buick construction.
