Most 1960s muscle cars were based on midsize platforms. Buick focused its performance-car engineering and marketing on the Skylark, particularly the Gran Sport and GS models. The Riviera, on the other hand, is a full-size car, and a luxurious one at that. One 1968 brochure called it “Buick Nobility.” But this Riviera has GS emblems on the front fenders. That indicates there’s some brawn beneath its flowing lines and chrome accents. Riviera GS models came from the factory with heavy-duty suspension components, a positraction differential and beefy H70-15 red- or white-stripe tires. The white-stripe tires on this car are mounted on chrome five-spoke wheels.

This Riviera definitely has muscle under the hood. Buick equipped the ’68 Rivieras with 430 CI engines rated at 360 HP and 475 lb-ft of torque. This car has a 455 CI V-8, which Buick added to the Riviera in 1970. More displacement means more power: The 455 produced 370 HP and a whopping 510 lb-ft of torque. Because the Riviera was a premium car, an automatic transmission was standard equipment, as were power steering and brakes. Buyers had a choice of bench or bucket seats “dressed in Madrid grain vinyl, the best vinyl,” said Buick. The bucket seats in this car are split by a full-length console with wood-grain accents and the transmission’s horseshoe-shaped shift lever.

Optional interior amenities include factory air conditioning, power windows and an AM/FM radio. The sale of this Riviera GS will include restoration receipts and an owner’s manual.
