Featuring the “400” equipment group, this LeSabre custom convertible is one of only 4,994 built in 1966, a few less than the even more upscale Electra 225 convertible, which saw production of 7,175 that same year. The “400” package was first introduced in 1965 and denoted a car with a more powerful engine and the Super Turbine 400 3-speed automatic transmission. This carried over into 1966, again affording cars with the 400 package the Super Turbine 400 3-speed automatic transmission, but the 300 CI V-8 was replaced by the 340 CI V-8, offering higher efficiency, smoother operation and more power.
Cars with the 400-equipment group got the high-compression, 4-barrel variant with 260 HP, a definite upgrade over cars equipped with the 2-speed Powerglide transmission and 220 HP, 340 CI V-8 engine with 2-barrel carburetor. This car was built at the Kansas City plant and has dual exhaust, power steering, power brakes and a power-operated black convertible top. Presented in Astro Blue, the matching blue interior features a split-back bench seat, air conditioning and a Sonomatic AM-radio. Interestingly, in spite of the higher performance nature and exceptional options, the car features manually operated windows.
Steel wheels are topped with spinner wire wheel covers and wrapped with whitewall tires, lending even more of a period-correct look to a beautifully appointed Buick. In-house competition was huge during the 1960s at General Motors, but Buick largely held its ground against the other divisions by continually producing conservative, elegant, understated luxury cars with a flair for performance. Today, these cars speak volumes to collectors and enthusiasts who often seek out Buicks for just those attributes—they weren’t as flashy as Cadillacs, yet not as spacey as Oldsmobiles, they were just right. This LeSabre Custom 400 is one of those cars—just right.
