Finished in white with a white convertible top and a red bench seat interior, this 1963 Buick LeSabre Convertible is a wonderful example of the breed. Fitted with a rebuilt 401 CI V-8 engine and a rebuilt automatic transmission, this Buick hails from the second generation of the LeSabre model, which was introduced for the 1959 model year. Buicks were normally well-equipped cars, and this one is no exception, featuring a glass back window, power steering and power brakes.
First seen on a Buick show car in 1951, the LeSabre featured a number of futuristic design elements including an aluminum, fiberglass and magnesium body, a supercharged aluminum V-8 engine that could run on methanol or gasoline and a rear-mounted transmission. Conjured up by GM design guru Harley Earl, the body hosted a unique jet-like front end that concealed two headlights and two massive tailfins that concealed two 20-gallon rubber fuel cells. It was powered by a 12-volt electrical system at a time when all American cars of the time used a 6-volt system; the car had heated seats, electric jacks to assist with changing tires and much more.
To say the car was packed with innovative ideas was a huge understatement. For 1959, Buick introduced an all-new lineup of style and names, the LeSabre replacing the Special as the entry-level model. An immediate hit, the LeSabre quickly became Buick’s best-selling model as it was very well equipped and fairly priced. For 1961, Buick drastically restyled the LeSabre, and then again restyled the car for 1963. The LeSabre appeared longer, lower and wider, thanks largely to the much boxier design, which kept Buick at the forefront of modern automotive styling.
