If it doesn’t look familiar, the beautiful 1951 Buick Super Estate station wagon seen here is one of only 2,212 built that year, which accounted for a mere 0.55 percent of the marque’s overall sales. The restyling on the year’s Super models had included a fresh grille treatment and classic 1950s Buick rounded-body shaping.
This Series 59 model was referred to in factory advertising as “the spirited car for smart city travel or casual country living … with room for six party-goers or a sextet of sportsman with gear to match.” While the party Buick copywriters were referring to was probably not at the beach, this classic model, constructed near the end of the GM era of real hardwood body work, will be sold with a custom-painted surfboard already loaded on the roof. Styling for 1951 further features the noted “Ventiports” on the front fenders, with three per side designating the inline-8 263 CI engine under the hood.
On this model, the noted chrome sweepspear side trim ran nearly the length of the body, beginning above the front wheel and continuing in a descending arch to the wide brightwork rear-fender shields. Inside is a two-tone blue-and-white interior, a column-shift automatic transmission and a carpeted rear load-in deck. A set of fender skirts are seen in the rear for your preferred installation. The car itself has been subject to a frame-on refreshing, showcasing both broad sheet-metal panels and the gorgeous section-fitted woodwork, which was installed along the upper section of the curvaceous rearward-sloping body.
Script emblems are on the rear quarters, with refinished chrome components adding a sense of 1950s automotive sparkle. Previously part of a collection in Pasadena, this is a multiple award-winning car themed around the classic woody era. The crowning touch here would be the chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall radial tires. Classic in a Super way, this woody wagon is ready for fun.
