Bugatti debuted the targa-top Grand Sport version of its Veyron 16.4 supercar at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. While incorporating only minor revisions to the windshield and running lights, the Grand Sport’s overall structure received extensive reinforcements to maintain high torsional stiffness. Equipped with a tight-fitting hardtop and active rear wing, the Grand Sport maintained the same 253 MPH top speed as the fixed-roof original, but when it was open it was limited to 229 MPH. The Super Sport followed in 2010, using an extra 199 HP and improved aerodynamics to elevate the Veyron’s already world-record performance with a top speed of 254 MPH.
Amazingly, the Veyron Super Sport was electronically limited to prevent its tires from disintegrating at its actual top speed of 267.856 MPH. Then, in 2012, the Molsheim company sounded the final note in its symphony of incomparable performance engineering: the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse (French for “speed”), an open-air Veyron powered by the Super Sport’s 1,200 HP quad-turbo W-16 engine. Like the Super Sport, the Vitesse’s extra 199 HP required making some mechanical revisions.
In addition to larger turbochargers, new intercoolers and more efficient ducting, the 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission features revised ratios, the all-wheel drive system’s ESP is less invasive, and 20-inch, diamond-cut wheels are complemented with improved brake cooling ducting feeding cooled air to carbon ceramic disc brakes with lightweight monoblock calipers and titanium pistons. This 2015 Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse is one of only 150 Grand Sports built worldwide and one of the last brought to the U.S.
Reflecting the often-dramatic presentation of many classic roadgoing Bugattis, it combines beautiful Satin Black over exposed carbon fiber with Orange Sanguine paint accents, Sanguine Orange powder-coated engine components and orange-accented, diamond-cut wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The color theme carries over into the interior, which features Tangerine and Anthracite Black leather, Anthracite piping and quilting on form-fitting bucket seats, and a polished aluminum 12 o’clock steering wheel ring.
Powered by the fabulous W-16 8.0L quad-turbocharged engine fed by raised carbon fiber intakes and producing 1,200 HP as seen here, the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse has a top speed of 254 MPH with a 0-60 MPH time of 2.4 seconds—numbers that can only begin to describe the most thoroughly engineered automobile in the world and the overwhelming driving experience it was built to deliver to a fortunate few.
