The ninth of just 11 examples produced for the U.S. market, this 2012 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport 16.4 is a sterling example of the world’s pre-eminent supercar that shows just 850 miles since new. Since its introduction in 2005, the Bugatti Veyron has unquestionably dominated its realm, an engineering work of high art signifying the most advanced of modern material, aerodynamic and thermodynamic management techniques.
After a design and development period fraught with unprecedented challenges, the Veyron astonished the motoring world with performance that literally surpassed every other exotic high-performance machine on Earth, wielding a quadruple-turbocharged 1,001 metric HP 8.0L W-16 engine, a dual-clutch 7-speed paddle-shifted DSG transaxle and all-wheel-drive, enormous aerospace-derived carbon-ceramic disc brakes and active aerodynamics. More than an instrument of sheer speed, however, the Veyron was designed from the start to be a luxury road car suitable for everyday use, drawing on Bugatti tradition for its distinctive exterior design and opulent interior accommodations.
Any discussion of the Veyron’s otherworldly powers must begin with its wealth of technological advances, all of which were achieved only at the insistence of Ferdinand Piech. The father of the legendary Porsche 917, former chairman of the Volkswagen Group and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, Piech set the original design parameters for the Veyron in the late 1990s, in the process bewildering his engineers with what seemed impossible performance targets, the most daunting of which was the task of managing the potential thermal output of an engine designed to generate 1,000 HP.
Piech’s experience developing the twin-turbocharged Porsche 917/30 Can-Am racers had long ago prepared him to push ahead through seemingly insurmountable problems to achieve his ends. Bugatti’s engineers faced two major tasks: first, develop systems from scratch to meet Piech’s demands, and second, integrate those systems into a single automobile. The process involved drawing on the knowledge of advanced industries in which materials and systems are regularly subjected to extreme speeds and forces, particularly aviation and space travel. As a result, the Veyron is capable of conquering frontiers of performance that would finish lesser automobiles.
The Bugatti Veyron’s crown jewel is its 8.0L W-16 powerplant, initially endowed with more than 1,000 HP. A compact all-alloy design that essentially comprises two siamesed VR-8 blocks, it measures just 28 inches in length, about that of a conventional V-12, but it constitutes virtually a quarter of the Veyron’s 4,160-pound curb weight when its ancillaries are included in the calculations. Designed to transmit much more than the W-16’s 922 lb-ft of torque to the road, the Veyron’s twin-clutch 7-speed DSG automatic transmission delivers seamless shifts under the hardest acceleration all the way to the Veyron’s governed top speed of 233 MPH.
To surpass that figure, the driver must completely stop the car and insert a second key to the left of his or her seat. Only after completing a performance checklist that includes checking tire pressures will the Veyron’s computer system unlock Top Speed mode, lowering ride height from 4.9 inches to 2.6 at the front and 2.8 at the rear. The front diffusers at each corner close and the rear spoiler angle decreases to reduce drag, allowing the Veyron to flex its muscles to the tune of 253 MPH, where it was designed to run for an extended period.
The next logical step in the Veyron’s evolution was to introduce the Grand Sport, a roadster version that pays homage to the beautiful Type 40 and Type 43 of the 1920s and ‘30s.
