A product of the great practice whereby manufacturers resurrect the styling and ethos of one of its most famous models of years past, BMW’s Z8 of 1999 is by all accounts the 21st Century successor to their legendary 507 of 1957. Though retaining the “Z” label first attached to the quirky and divisive Z1 Roadster, and subsequent mass production Z3, the Z8 could not be more different in its design, engineering, and intention from these two preceding models.
Inspiration for the Z8 came in 1993 when BMW’s Wolfgang Reitzle and Bernd Pischetsrieder attended a party at the factory where a 507 was displayed. The duo liked what they saw and decided that, one day, they would try to repeat the trick. Conceived under code Z07, a team from BMW Technik GmbH developed a concept car that was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1997. The resulting Z8 production car completed development in 1999, and it remained amazingly true the initial concept. The Z8’s clever retro-inspired styling was the work of Henrik Fisker, who was then heading up BMW’s Designworks studio in California. The model’s understructure was built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant, with final assembly in dedicated limited-production workshops at the company’s sprawling Munich campus.
The Z8 was to serve not only as a “halo” car for the entire BMW lineup but it was also used as a test bed for new engineering techniques. The real technical achievement was hidden away from view—an advanced form of welded and extruded aluminium space-frame chassis construction. Ultimately, the same construction methods were used to underpin the BMW-engineered Rolls-Royce Phantom which appeared four years later.
All Z8s were fitted with a six-speed manual transmission paired to BMW’s silky smooth and powerful 394 brake horsepower, 4.9-litre naturally-aspirated V-8 engine, as used in contemporaneous 5 Series and 7 Series models. Today, nearly 25 years after its show-stopping debut, the Z8 remains among the most recognisable, and sought-after BMW models.
This uncommon “Triple Black” BMW Z8 example was delivered new to Dreyer & Reinbold BMW of Indianapolis, Indiana on 9 February 2001. Production statistics compiled by the official BMW International Z8 Club show that BMW painted nearly three times as many Z8s in Titanium Silver in preference over the Jet Black colour shown here.
The car remained in Indiana until December 2010, when it was acquired by a broker then indicating just shy of 19,000 miles. In September 2015, it was imported to Switzerland, and subsequently added to the extensive holdings of The Carrera Collection.
As presented today, this wonderful “Triple Black” Z8 has been carefully enjoyed under current ownership, and its odometer indicates just 22,971 miles at the time of cataloguing. Offered with a hard-top roof and now riding upon a choice set of 20-inch Alpina Dynamic D01 light alloy wheels which greatly enhance its retro-modern aesthetic, this Z8 is an alluring proposition that is not to be missed.
Der BMW Z8 von 1999 ist nach allem Dafürhalten ein Ergebnis der Praxis der Automobilhersteller, Styling und Aura ihrer berühmtesten Modelle für wichtige Modelle wiederzubeleben. So ist der Münchner Zweitürer ganz sicher der Nachfolger des BMW 507 im 21. Jahrhundert. Und obwohl auch er das Z im Namen trägt wie der kontroverse Z1 und der für das Unternehmen sehr lukrative Z3, könnte er doch in punkto Design, Technik und Absicht nicht unterschiedlicher sein als seine beiden Vorgänger im Geiste.
Die Inspiration für den Z8 kam BMWs damaligem Entwicklungschef Wolfgang Reitzle und dem Vorstandsvorsitzenden Bernd Pischetsrieder bei einer öffentlichen Veranstaltung, bei der auch ein 507 gezeigt wurde. Beide mochten, was sie sahen, und entschieden sich dort, den Trick zu wiederholen. Unter dem Codenamen Z07 entstand bei der BMW Technik GmbH ein Konzeptfahrzeug, das im Oktober 1997 auf der Tokio Motor Show gezeigt wurde. Das daraus resultierende Serienmodell mit dem Namen Z8 blieb dabei dem Konzept erstaunlich nahe. Das clevere retro-inspirierte Styling stammte aus der Feder von Henrik Fisker in den BMW Designworks in Kalifornien.
Der Unterbau des Roadsters entstand im BMW Werk Dingolfing während die Endmontage in einer eigens ausgewiesenen Werkstatt im weitläufigen Münchner BMW Gelände erfolgte.
Der BMW Z8 sollte aber nicht nur als „Halo Car“, quasi als Flaggschiff für das ganze Modellprogramm, dienen, sondern war auch als Entwicklungsfahrzeug von großem Interesse für die Ingenieure, die darin neue Technologien ausprobierten. Dabei war die wirkliche Leistung von außen nicht zu sehen: der hochmoderne Spaceframe aus geschweißten und stranggepressten Aluminiumbauteilen; eine Technik, wie sie vier Jahre später dann im neuen Rolls-Royce Phantom eingesetzt wurde.
Serienmäßig gab es für den Z8 nur die Wahl eines Sechsgang-Handschaltgetriebes in Verbindung mit dem 4,9-Liter V8-Saugmotor mit 400 PS wie er in vielen 5er und 7er Limousinen der Zeit zu finden war. Heute, fast 25 Jahre nach dem Debut des Modells, ist der Z8 eines der bekanntesten und gesuchtesten BMW Modelle.
Dieser BMW Z8 in seltenem „triple black“ wurde am 9. Februar 2001 neu an den BMW Händler Dreyer & Reinbold in Indianapolis/USA ausgeliefert. Die vom offiziellen BMW International Z8 Club zusammengestellten Produktionsstatistiken zeigen, dass BMW fast dreimal so viele Z8 in Titansilber lackiert hat wie in der hier gezeigten Farbe Jet Black. Der Wagen blieb bis Dezember 2010 in Indiana, wo er von einem Makler erworben wurde. Der Tacho zeigte damals knapp 19.000 Meilen an. Im September 2015 wurde er in die Schweiz importiert und anschließend in die umfangreichen Bestände der Carrera Collection aufgenommen.
Dieser wunderbare "Triple Black" Z8 wurde von seinem jetzigen Besitzer sorgfältig gepflegt, und der Tacho zeigte zum Zeitpunkt der Katalogisierung nur 22.971 Meilen an. Die 20 Zoll- Dynamic D01 Leichtmetallfelgen von Alpina passen hervorragend zu der retro-modernen Optik des Roadsters. Wahrlich eine Gelegenheit, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte.
