When the next (E39) iteration arrived in 1998, it marked a switch away from BMW's traditional inline six-cylinder engine to a new 4.9-liter V8 - type S62 - which delivered its 394bhp via a Getrag six-speed manual gearbox. A limited-slip differential formed part of the suitably strengthened 5-Series transmission, while the suspension likewise had been extensively modified to cope with the M5's greatly increased performance. Anti-lock brakes, EML ('drive by wire') throttle control, and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) were standard, while the Servotronic power assisted steering was speed sensitive. Once again, BMW choose to limit top speed to 155mph, but the respected German motoring magazine
Auto Motor und Sport
has stated that – de-restricted – the E39 M5 has topped 300km/h (186mph) in some tests.
The E39 BMW M5 has attained status as one of the most legendary sports sedans ever made. Despite all of the accolades that it has achieved, it has always fallen short in one crucial area: the ability to haul small furniture and plants. While BMW offered the E39 as a wagon, the most powerful options available was the 4.4-liter V8 powered 540i—which was only offered with an automatic transmission in the US.
The mythical creature offered here is about as close to a factory-built E39 M5 Touring as one can get without having both a time machine and the ability to affect BMWs production plans in the late 1990s. Starting in June of 2015 with a 2002 540i Touring that had 130,000 miles and a salvaged 2003 M5 donor car with under 29,000 original miles, the mad scientists at Bavarian Professionals, Inc went about marrying the interior and drivetrain from the M5 into the 540i. A process that took over a year, the 540i was fully disassembled to 'body-in-white' and rebuilt to be stronger, faster, better.
Finished in Jet Black over black leather, nary a detail was missed in replicating the interior and exterior look of the sedan and applying it to the wagon. While the basics like the front and rear bumpers were matched to the sedan, so were the mirrors, side marker lights, M-sport steering wheels and seats, M5 gauges, and even the sill plates in the doors. Receipts for the conversion—not including the cost of the donor cars—totaled over $66,000. Since emerging from the shop in its new, more awesome, long-roof form, a further $9,000 in service and routine maintenance has been performed over the course of the last eight years and roughly 4,000 miles.
While anyone can get a Mercedes-Benz E55 or E63 Wagon, Audi RS6 Avant, or even a Porsche Panamera Turbo SportTurismo—short of building your own E39 M5 Touring, this is one of your only chances to get this beast that represents the future we were promised in our dreams.
