Introduced in 1978, the BMW M1 took the brand wholly into the realm of the supercar. Largely hand built, the car featured a tube frame and a sleek body designed by Giugiaro. Powered by a 3.5 Liter, DOHC inline-6 cylinder engine featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, six throttle bodies and four valves per cylinder, the street version produced just under 300 HP. In full-race tune with turbos, it produced 800 HP. The idea behind the M1 was to serve as homologation cars to allow BMW to meet Group 5 regulations, with limited production of road cars.
However, FISA, the organization that organized Group 5 racing, changed homologation rules to require that 400 cars to be built to qualify for Group 4. BMW continued development of M1 and was able to qualify for Procar Series, where raced the M1. It didn’t take long for the car to make its mark, leaving an incredible impression on the motorsports community. In 1982, the series had run its course and M1 production ended. It was at this time that Peter Gartemann, the owner a German BMW dealership named AHG, had the idea of taking an owner's street M1 and converting it to Procar specs.
Called AHG M1 Studie cars, customers who turned their M1s over for conversion would receive a number of modifications to both body, chassis, and engine which was tuned to 350 HP. AHG commissioned Hermann Altmiks to paint each M1 in a unique scheme as directed by the customer. It is believed that only 10 were built, creating a unique spin of one of the rarest sports cars ever built. Presented here is one of the 10 M1s upgraded by AHG in 1982.
It features Procar bodywork, a matching-numbers 3.5L/350 HP, DOHC inline 6-cylinder engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, 5-speed manual transmission, special racing clutch, adjustable racing suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, three-piece BBS wheels, leather interior and Herman Altmiks paint scheme in BMW livery. This is a unique opportunity to obtain an unrestored BMW M1 AHG that has been driven just 6,765 kilometers since new.
