While the BMW 501 could easily be enjoyed as a luxury cruiser, the six-cylinder engine found in earlier models did not have much to spare once the weight of the sumptuously appointed saloon car had been accounted for. The Munich marque then introduced the 502 at the 1954 Geneva Motor Show, using the same chassis and body as the 501 but with a grander interior and notably featuring a lightweight aluminium V-8 engine block. While the saloon body was the most popular style for the 502, a limited number of cabriolet and coupé versions were made by Karosserie Baur over 1954 and 1955.
The example offered here is thought to be one of only 29 examples made to feature Baur’s flowing coupé body, making it rarer than the 57 cabriolets produced. Delivered to Helsinki in September 1955, the BMW is understood to have been owned first by Aleksi Patama, a racing driver who competed in the Finnish Grand Prix. It is said that Mr Patama routinely drove the 502 Coupé back to Germany for servicing and repairs, and oversaw the colour change from a green-grey to the shade of red it is presented in today. The car changed hands in the 1970s and its subsequent owner kept the BMW for two decades. It was subsequently acquired by The Munich Masterpieces Collection in 1993 and is offered with a Birth Certificate by BMW Classic.
Fascinatingly rare and retaining its matching-numbers engine, the Baur-styled 502 Coupé represents the pinnacle of attractive 1950s styling while being backed by assuring 2.6-litre V-8 power.
Der frühe BMW 501 mit seinem Sechszylindermotor war ein angenehmer und komfortabler Reisewagen, der aber mit dem Gewicht der gut ausgestatteten Limousine zu kämpfen hatte. Auf dem Genfer Salon 1954 zeigte die Münchner Marke den 502, der Aufbau und Fahrwerk mit dem 501 teilte, aber über einen aufgewerteten Innenraum verfügte und vor allem einen neuen leichten Aluminium-V8. Und obwohl die Limousine in der Modellreihe 502 den Löwenanteil für sich beanspruchte, wurden zwischen 1954 und 1955 bei Karosserie Baur auch eine kleine Anzahl von Coupés und Cabriolets gebaut.
Das hier angebotene Exemplar ist eines von wohl nur 29 zweitürigen Coupés von Baur, die daher noch seltener sind als die ebenfalls dort entstandenen 57 Cabriolets. Ausgeliefert wurde das Coupé im September 1955 in Helsinki an den finnischen Rennfahrer Aleksi Patama, der beim Großen Preis von Finnland angetreten war. Es wird gesagt, dass Herr Patama das 502 Coupé regelmäßig zu Wartung und Reparaturen selbst nach Deutschland gefahren hat. Ebenfalls war er es, der eine Umlackierung vom ursprünglichen Grüngrau in das Rot in Auftrag gegeben hat, das es noch heute trägt. In den 1970er Jahren ging der bayerische Zweitürer an seinen nächsten Besitzer, der den Wagen zwei Jahrzehnte sein Eigen nannte. 1993 wurde er von der Munich Masterpieces Collection angekauft.
