Bentley revived the Continental nameplate in 1984 as a moniker steeped in company heritage earned in the 1950s and 1960s. At a time when the histories of the Bentley and Rolls-Royce marques were intertwined, cars from the brands often shared a common platform. For the 1991 model year, reflective of chassis 30561 offered here, the Continental Convertible was in essence a Bentley-badged Rolls-Royce Corniche III.
As is noted in the accompanying build sheets and order forms (available to view on file), the Bentley Continental was ordered for delivery to supplying dealer Auto Bang of Copenhagen. The Bentley was specified in special order King of Denmark Blue paint over a Beige mohair hood with a Magnolia leather interior. The car benefitted from optional extras including a tinted Sundym windscreen, Bentley and Continental boot badges, and a chrome-finished radiator grille surround. Its order forms note its arrival in Copenhagen in July 1991.
Remarkably, almost 35 years later, the Bentley has not been driven since. Its odometer indicates just 131 “shakedown” kilometres at the time of cataloguing. Protective packaging from the factory remains stuck to the steering wheel and sills, while the Bentley retains its matching-numbers 6.75-litre engine. Owing to its lack of use in careful storage, bidders are encouraged to perform a mechanical inspection and service prior to driving the car. Needless to say, the opportunity to acquire such an attractive “time warp” luxury drop-top will not come around again soon.
Der Name Continental hat bei Bentley eine lange Tradition, die bis in die 1950er und 1960er Jahre zurückreicht. 1984 wurde dieser Name wiederbelebt, als die Marken Rolls-Royce und Bentley noch eng verbunden waren und oft identische Plattformen nutzten, und so ist der hier angebotene Continental aus dem Jahr 1991, Chassis 30561, im Grunde ein umbenannter Rolls-Royce Corniche III.
Wie den Bestell- und Produktionsdokumenten zu entnehmen ist, die sich bei den Unterlagen zum Fahrzeug befinden, wurde dieser Bentley Continental zur Auslieferung durch den Händler Auto Bang in Kopenhagen bestellt. Die besondere Spezifikation umfasst eine Lackierung im Spezialfarbton King of Denmark Blue, ein Verdeck in beigem Mohair und Leder im Farbton Magnolia. Darüber hinaus wurden einige Optionen hinzubestellt, darunter eine getönte Frontscheibe („Sundym“), Bentley und Continental Markenzeichen auf dem Kofferraum und ein chromumrandeter Kühlergrill. Die Bestellunterlagen notieren die Ankunft des offenen Bentley in Kopenhagen im Juli 1991.
Erstaunlicherweise wurde der Bentley in den darauffolgenden 35 Jahren bis heute nicht gefahren, denn der Kilometerzähler zeigte zum Zeitpunkt der Drucklegung bis heute nur 131 „Einfahrkilometer“ an. Schutzfolien an Lenkrad und Schwellerverkleidung wurden nie entfernt, und auch der 6,75-Liter Motor ist original. Auf Grund der sehr geringen Nutzung während der sorgfältigen Lagerung, sollten Bieter vor Wiederinbetriebnahme des Fahrzeugs eine Inspektion der Technik und eine Wartung durchführen lassen. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass sich eine solche Gelegenheit so schnell nicht wieder bieten wird, eine solche Zeitkapsel zu erwerben.
