The Martin DBS first appeared with the 4.0-litre 'six' of the concurrently produced DB6. This well proven engine was available in standard tune, producing 282bhp, or, as a no-cost option, to 325bhp Vantage specification. Larger and more luxuriously appointed than the DB6, the DBS was, inevitably, heavier, though the Vantage's top speed of 140mph and a standing quarter-mile time of 16.3 seconds were highly respectable figures nonetheless. A total of 787 cars had been completed prior to the arrival of the DBS V8.
One of the last 50 DBS models completed, '5812' comes with a copy guarantee form showing that it is an original Vantage and, as a late car, has the 'dogleg' ZF five-speed gearbox. Originally finished in Deep Carriage Green, the Aston was first registered as 'JTB 222K' and sold new to one J V R Bullough, Esq of Lancashire.
In 1986, at 36,839 miles, HWM Ltd sold the DBS to a Mr D Muecke. The car was sold 'Subject to Report' and the accompanying maintenance history lists the work HWM subsequently undertook. By 1990 (at 50,485 miles) the car was owned by a Mr Bell of Surrey who, among other works, commissioned a factory restoration of the chassis and sills by Aston Martin Lagonda Limited. Over the course of the ensuing 19 years the Aston covered only 11,000 miles. In 1993 (at 56,000 miles) AMOC member Barry France purchased the DBS, which he would keep for the next 14 years, covering only 4,000 miles during that period. Messrs Muecke, Bell and France each had the car inspected and reports made on its condition. The most recent was undertaken in 1999 for Mr France by the Aston Martin Owners Club.
The vendor purchased the Aston in October 2009 from Aston Martin specialist brokers Byron International, whose detailed and lengthy summary of all works carried out between November 1986 and July 2009 is on file (inspection recommended). There is also a list of MoT dates and mileage for the period November 1979 (57,517 miles) to October 1993 (61,581 miles), all of which would seem to support the total recorded mileage. The car also comes with its last UK V5C Registration Certificate recording two keepers: John Hewitt (from 14th October 2007) and Antony Moody (from 1st January 2008), both resident in Warwickshire. The DBS Vantage will require recommissioning having been on static display since its purchase by the current owner.
A rare opportunity to acquire an original manual variant of one of the most desirable of post-war Aston Martins.
