Described in company sales literature as “perfectly suited for long and quick travels and for touring purposes,” the Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider was the highlight of the new-for-1958 line that served to replace the popular but decade-old 1900 in its various forms. Based on the late 1900 model’s drivetrain and suspension, both the 2000 Berlina sedan and the Spider were powered by Alfa’s highly successful iron block, aluminum-head, DOHC, 2000cc inline-4 engine with twin Solex carburetors, which was teamed in the Spider with an excellent, floor-shifted, 5-speed manual gearbox.
Unequal-length, double-wishbone front and live-axle rear suspension with coilovers at the corners, rear drum brakes and front disc brakes gave the Spider sure-footed but comfortable driving dynamics for a superb grand-touring experience, and its Carrozzeria Touring coachwork has proven its timelessness over the six-and-a-half decades since its introduction at the 1957 Turin Motor Show. One of 3,343 produced from 1958 through 1961, this final-year Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider rides on Michelin 195R-400 radial tires on painted plate wheels with chromed caps. Knowledgeable collectors will note that this example shows off separate twin hood scoops and twin chrome body side strips.
These features distinguished the European models from their American market counterparts, which sported a single hood bulge with two scoops separated by a chrome strip and a single chrome spear on each side. This 1961 2000 Spider features a gorgeous and impressively roomy contrasting red interior with leather seats well suited to long-distance touring. A full range of Veglia instruments, including a metric speedometer and 8,000-RPM tachometer, faces the driver from behind the three-spoked Sport steering wheel.
Offered with both hard and soft tops in black and a red top boot, this is a wonderful example of a milestone model in Alfa Romeo’s long history of producing world-class grand-touring automobiles.
