In 1967, Alfa Romeo introduced a concept sport coupe at Expo 67 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Designed by Marcelo Gandini, Montreal offered an exotic style that was sprinkled with several unique design features such as quad headlights partially covered by horizontal blinds, a NACA inlet on the hood, horizontal C-pillar vents and centrally mounted dual exhausts. Presented without a name, the people simply began referring to it as The Montreal, which stuck when Alfa Romeo elected to begin building the car for the 1970 model year.
Priced more than a Porsche 911 or Jaguar E-Type, many suffered from sticker shock, but the Montreal was recognized as a true exotic thanks to its styling, body and interior construction methods, low-volume production and engine, which was derived from the 2.0L V-8 used in the 33 Stradale and the Tipo 33 sports prototype racer. Enlarged and tuned for street use, the production engine measured 2.6L and used SPICA fuel injection; all things told, it was good for a respectable 197 HP, enough to run the two-seater from 0-60 MPH in less than 8 seconds and top out near 140 MPH.
It wasn’t for everyone, largely because of the price, but interestingly, despite being introduced in Montreal, Alfa Romeo never officially imported the Montreal to the North American market because of emissions and safety regulations both Canada and the United States required. Many agree that, regardless of the price, had Alfa Romeo adjusted the Montreal to meet those standards, it would likely have been a much better sales success. Then again, handling it the way Alfa Romeo did created an instant icon, a classic dream car enthusiasts and collectors could aspire to own. Between 1971 and 1975, only about 3,925 per built.
This one is finished in orange with a black cloth interior and is powered by the proper dry-sump, aluminum DOHC V-8 engine and 5-speed manual transmission. Having covered only 58,905 kilometers (36,602 miles) from new, it presents remarkably well; the paint is deep, reflective and shiny, and the interior looks prepared for a magazine photoshoot, complete with a wood-rimmed steering wheel. Rolling on Campagnolo wheels with Dunlop tires, this Montreal exhibits all the characteristics Alfa Romeo and Gandini intended of the handsome GT sports coupe.
