The final offspring of the famed Giulia range and direct successor to the 1967-1972 1750 GT Veloce, the Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce was introduced in June 1971 at the Gardone Riviera on the shore of Lake Garda, Italy. In keeping with Alfa’s long tradition of building lightweight, practical, high-performance grand touring cars, the 2000 GT Veloce was powered by a 2.0L/130 HP version of the vaunted all aluminum twin-cam inline-4 engine that had served Alfa since 1954. Twin carburetors were standard in all but North American spec models, which were fitted with mechanical-port fuel injection by Italian manufacturer SPICA to meet the more stringent emissions standards there.
A 5-speed gearbox, independent front and live-axle rear suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes were also standard fare. A limited-slip differential was standard on North American models in 1972-1974, and air conditioning was available only in USA market cars from 1973 to 1974. The 2000 GT Veloce continued to wear the same elegant coachwork designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone in 1963, but it was easily distinguished by a new horizontal bar grille design with protrusions shaping the Alfa shield, a motif that would remain in future evolutions.
Passenger comfort remained a central feature, the most notable improvement being the separate instrument cluster in front of the driver in place of the earlier in-dash gauge arrangement. One of 5,171 produced in the final year of production for the U.S. market, this 1974 Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce was the recipient of a comprehensive restoration completed by marque experts Alfa Performance Connection of Orange County, California, and Norman Noosha Panuyeh, LLC. Festooned in brilliant Azure Le Mans with a tan interior, it retains the original rebuilt matching-numbers 2.0L/131 HP twin-cam 4-cylinder engine teamed with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
A California car, it also offers Jaeger instrumentation, a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel and factory air conditioning. This sharp Alfa GT Veloce coupe is the very embodiment of the sporting Italian-style grand touring machine.
