This 1969 Alfa Romeo 2000 GTAm blurs the edge between a purpose-built race car and a street-legal canyon carver. This is a dual-purpose machine equally adept at producing competitive lap times on track day as it is at being an exotic street car that evokes raw emotion from its pure driving experience and admiring glances from on-lookers. This car is reminiscent of the potent Alfa Romeo GTV’s that were the scourge of the 1971 Trans-Am racing series in the under 2.5L Category. Driven by Horst Kwech, the Alfa GTV had won the overall series championship and the season-ending race at Laguna Seca before it was later disqualified at post-race tech inspection for carrying too much fuel.
The engine in this GTAm has been extensively modified from its original 1,750cc configuration that produced 130 HP to a 2.0L with a state of tune that produces 240 HP. This powerplant features side-draft Weber carburetion, twin-plug ignition and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. The entire suspension and braking system has been upgraded to similar high standards for performance, reliability and safety.
The visual cues of its competition intention include the bulging fenders on all four corners necessary to house low aspect-ratio race tires mounted on wide offset wheels, a Plexiglas rear window with a series of holes drilled out for cockpit air evacuation, the side exhaust exit just ahead of the rear-wheel arch, a pop-top fuel filler mounted on the trunk and the removal of bumpers. The interior also reflects the minimalist no-nonsense vibe with the removal of all insulation and sound-deadening material, the installation of a full roll cage, competition gauges and racing seats.
This is truly a high-quality build of a legendary race car from the annals of Alfa Romeo racing: the 1969 2000 GTAm.
