Alfa Romeo established the “small car, big performance” formula that would characterize the marque’s finest postwar offerings when they introduced the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint in 1954. The company’s Twin Cam inline four-cylinder engine was downsized to 1,290 cubic centimeters for the 750-series Giulietta, making use of an alloy cylinder block in the process. The Sprint coupe was joined shortly afterwards by the Berlina and Spider 750D versions, the latter styled by Pinin Farina and built on a slightly shorter wheelbase.
The Giulietta Spider’s combination of a rev-happy engine, fine handling, a responsive chassis, and good brakes made it a driver’s car par excellence—arguably superior in driving dynamics when compared with its primary competitor, Porsche’s 356 Cabriolet and Speedster.
With its timeless styling and endlessly enjoyable performance, any Giulietta Spider is a pleasure to behold and to use. This 1959 Giulietta Spider, however, is further elevated by its notable competition history: First registered in Palermo, Italy in June 1959, it participated in the 45th running of the Targa Florio in 1961.
On this occasion Mario Tropia and Giuseppe Parla drove it for the Nissena team; the Alfa Romeo was entered in the GT1.3 class, and it wore the number 22 livery. It did not finish the notoriously challenging race on the rugged, 72-kilometer on Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, however. A historical photo on file shows the car surrounded by spectators and looking somewhat the worse for wear, with an obvious indentation on its driver’s side front bumper!
This Giulietta Spider currently wears a well-maintained cosmetic and mechanical restoration, which saw it refinished in Biancospiro over a black interior with red piping; correct-type Borrani wheels complete the exterior, while the cabin appears very much like it must have looked when Tropia and Parla took the wheel decades ago.
More recently, the car regained the number 22 livery it wore for the 1961 Targa Florio—a meaningful tribute to its participation in one of motorsport’s grandest and most storied events and, perhaps, an invitation for its next owners to enjoy this wonderful Giulietta Spider in historic races, rallies, and tours worldwide.
Alfa Romeo ha creato la formula "piccola auto, grandi prestazioni" che avrebbe caratterizzato le sue migliori vetture del dopoguerra, quando, nel 1954, ha presentato la Giulietta Sprint disegnata da Bertone. Il motore con testata in alluminio,bialbero a quattro cilindri in linea, fu ridotto a 1.290 centimetri cubi per il suo utilizzo sulla Giulietta della serie 750. Alla Sprint coupé si affiancarono poco dopo le versioni Berlina e Spider tipo 750D, quest'ultima disegnata da Pinin Farina e costruita su un telaio con passo leggermente più corto.
La combinazione creata con la Giulietta Spider di un motore rapido nel prendere i giri, maneggevolezza e di un telaio reattivo con buoni freni, ha reso questa l'auto per chi ama guidare per eccellenza. Una vettura probabilmente superiore nella dinamica di guida alle sue principali concorrenti: la 356 Cabriolet e Speedster della Porsche.
Con il suo stile senza tempo e le prestazioni incredibilmente piacevoli, qualsiasi Giulietta Spider è un piacere da guardare e da usare. Questa Giulietta Spider del 1959 tuttavia, è ulteriormente migliorata dalla sua notevole storia agonistica: immatricolata per la prima volta a Palermo nel giugno del 1959, ha partecipato, nel 1961, alla 45a edizione della Targa Florio.
In quell’occasione Mario Tropia e Giuseppe Parla l’hanno guidata come parte della squadra della Scuderia Nissena; l'Alfa Romeo era iscritta nella classe GT 1.3, e portava il numero di gara 22. La Giulietta, tuttavia, non ha concluso la gara, notoriamente impegnativa e disputata sull'aspro percorso di 72 chilometri del Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie. Una foto storica disponibile nel faldone che accompagna la vettura, mostra l'auto, circondata dagli spettatori e con un aspetto malandato, con un'evidente ammaccatura sul paraurti anteriore sinistro!
Questa Giulietta Spider è offerta dopo aver subito un restauro estetico e meccanico ed essere stata ben tenuta. Finita in Biancospiro su interni neri con bordini rossi ha le ruote Borrani del tipo corretto a completare l’aspetto esteriore, mentre l'abitacolo sembra molto simile a come doveva essere decenni addietro, quando Tropia e Parla hanno preso il volante.
Più recentemente, l'auto ha riacquistato il numero di gara 22 che indossava per la Targa Florio del 1961, un significativo tributo alla sua partecipazione a uno degli eventi più importanti nella storia delle competizioni motoristiche e, forse, un invito ai suoi prossimi proprietari a godersi questa meravigliosa Giulietta Spider in gare storiche, rally e viaggi in tutto il mondo.
