The Alfa Romeo 155 saloon was unveiled in January 1992 at Barcelona, with the public launch at the Geneva Motor Show two months later. The 155 in its various forms would prove to be immensely successful in touring car racing across Europe, winning the Italian Superturismo Championship and German DTM Championship (both with Nicola Larini at the wheel); the Spanish Touring Car Championship (with Adrián Campos); and the British Touring Car Championship (with Gabriele Tarquini). Its Tipo 156 replacement would prove equally competitive.
The Alfa Romeo 155 offered here is an example of the 320bhp, six-speed D2 version, this particular car having been driven by the Italian star Stefano Modena during the 1996 season. Born in his namesake city of Modena in 1961, Stefano started racing karts and worked his way up through the junior formulae before landing a drive with Brabham for the final Formula 1 race of 1987. His best season in F1 was 1991, when he finished 8th overall in the World Championship, and after another disappointing year he quit to concentrate on racing in the Italian Superturismo Championship.
Towards the end of the 1994 season Stefano joined Alfa Corse, winning his first two races in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (at Avus) at the wheel of a 155. He followed that up with a brace of 2nd places at the next round at the Allemannenring, and ended the year in 12th place in the Championship despite having contested only three rounds. Remaining with Alfa Romeo as part of Euroteam, he raced in the International Touring and DTM championships in 1995, finishing 7th and 16th respectively, before joining the factory-supported JAS Motorsport Alfa Corse team for 1996.
JAS Motorsport was contesting the International Touring Car Championship, and at the season's end Stefano finished in 12th place overall having been on the podium three times. This ex-Modena Alfa Romeo 155 D2 is offered with a Wagenpass (logbook) and an Abarth Heritage Certificate. Re-commissioning will be required before the car returns to the racetrack.
