Is This Still a GTI?

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI takes a formula that has defined the GTI for decades and flips nearly every mechanical ingredient. The familiar compact hatchback remains, but the combustion engine and front-wheel drive are gone. In their place is a single electric motor producing 322 hp / 326 PS / 240 kW and 402 lb-ft / 545 Nm, with power sent exclusively to the rear wheels.
That makes the ID.3 GTI the most powerful production GTI yet, although only by 1 PS over the Golf GTI Edition 50. Performance is brisk rather than extreme: 0–62 mph / 0–100 kph takes 5.6 seconds, while top speed is limited to 124 mph / 200 kph.
Volkswagen has also carried plenty of GTI character into the electric era. Adaptive suspension, progressive steering and Launch Control remain, while Tornado Red paint and modern tartan seats echo the original. A dedicated GTI mode adjusts the chassis, turns the displays red and even adds simulated engine sound.
But the biggest question isn't about performance. If the engine and front-wheel drive disappear, is this still a GTI? And can electric power create the same character that made the badge famous?
