The new Mitsubishi Pajero could be a surprisingly affordable rival to the Toyota Land Cruiser — at least if its Australian pricing is anything to go by.
In Australia, the five-seat Pajero starts at AU$68,490, while the seven-seat GLS costs AU$69,990. That works out to less than $50,000 in U.S. dollars, putting it well below the Australian equivalent of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.
The rugged SUV comes with a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 201 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. A dual-range 4x4 system, Active Yaw Control and a standard locking rear differential underline its off-road focus.
So, could Mitsubishi bring this formula to America? The diesel-only setup makes a U.S. launch difficult, while a Nissan-based solution may be more realistic. With the Nissan Frontier expected to underpin future rugged models, a new Mitsubishi Montero could potentially share that architecture.
