The China-made Mercedes-Benz VLE has been spotted during China's homologation process, revealing key dimensions, seating configuration, and two electric powertrain options. The new MPV is preparing to enter one of the world's most competitive luxury van markets, where premium domestic brands are rapidly gaining ground.

The Mercedes-Benz VLE is the production model derived from the Vision V concept and began European production in Spain in June 2026. Now, Mercedes-Benz is preparing local manufacturing through the Fujian Benz joint venture, which also builds the V-Class and Vito.

The Chinese-spec VLE measures 5,310 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,922 mm tall, with a 3,340-mm wheelbase. It offers seven seats in a 2+2+3 layout and weighs between 3,030 and 3,220 kg depending on specification. Features include a panoramic roof, sliding rear doors, a 360-degree camera system, and a 550-mm-deep cargo area.

The entry-level Mercedes-Benz VLE 300 uses a front-mounted ZF EM0047 electric motor producing up to 200 kW (268 hp). The more powerful Mercedes-Benz VLE 400 adds a rear ZF EM0048 motor for all-wheel drive, bringing combined peak output to 305 kW (409 hp). Both versions use ternary NMC batteries supplied through the CATL-Benz joint venture, although battery capacity has not yet been disclosed.

Can Mercedes-Benz challenge China's increasingly sophisticated luxury MPVs with the locally built VLE? The competition includes the Denza D9, Voyah Dream, Luxeed V9, Zeekr 009, Li Auto Mega, and the ultra-luxurious Maextro V680 and Maextro V800.

Prices in this segment currently range from around 309,800 yuan for the Denza D9 to more than 1 million yuan for the Maextro V800. That leaves Mercedes-Benz entering a market where domestic manufacturers already offer a wide range of premium electric MPVs.

Will the VLE's Mercedes-Benz badge be enough to justify its position against these established Chinese rivals?
