The Defender’s Next Big Evolution

The Land Rover Defender has come a long way from its utilitarian off-road roots. Now, its next evolution could take the iconic 4x4 into distinctly American territory: the pickup-truck market.

JLR and Stellantis signed a non-binding agreement earlier this year to explore joint product and technology development in the U.S. According to a recent report, their first vehicle could be a Defender pickup created specifically for American buyers.

The project would not replace the current Defender built in Slovakia. Instead, it could give the nameplate a new body style in a segment Land Rover does not currently compete in across the U.S.

Exactly what would sit underneath the pickup remains unknown. Stellantis brings extensive truck experience through Ram and Jeep, but its pickups use body-on-frame construction, while the modern Defender relies on a unibody platform. That raises an interesting engineering question: how would the two approaches come together?

With the U.S. already a major market for JLR, the business case is easy to understand. But would a pickup strengthen the Defender lineup—or take the nameplate too far? Could it still deliver the character buyers expect from a Defender? And would you want one?
