The new BYD Sealion 08 is off to a strong start in China, collecting more than 12,000 firm orders during its first 24 hours on sale. The SUV is offered in eight versions, priced from 229,900 to 279,900 yuan ($33,800–$41,200), with both BEV and PHEV powertrains available.
Inspired by BYD’s Ocean S concept, the Sealion 08 features split headlights, a full-width light bar, active-looking air channels and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. Every version gets the God’s Eye B driver-assistance system with the God’s Eye 5.0 platform.
Inside, the Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 cabin combines leather-like materials, decorative panels, ambient lighting and a floating touchscreen. Buyers can choose five- or six-seat layouts, with the latter adding second-row captain’s chairs and a large rear entertainment display.
The PHEV uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine and electric motors, offering up to 400 km of CLTC electric range and 1,650 km combined. BEV versions offer up to 370 kW and 800–900 km of CLTC range, depending on configuration.
Fast charging can add usable range in five minutes, while a full charge can take as little as nine minutes under applicable conditions. Could the Sealion 08 become BYD’s next major hit? Are buyers choosing PHEV or BEV? And can its technology challenge more expensive rivals?
