When to change transfer case oil in a Lexus NX

For the second-generation petrol Lexus NX AWD covered by the manual reviewed here, transfer case oil replacement is due at 40,000 km or 48 months. Certain demanding conditions shorten this to 20,000 km or 24 months. Use whichever limit comes first, after confirming that your version has this type of component.

This article uses the NX 350 AWD as its example and the NX 350 / NX 250 / NX 200 owner’s manual published on lexus.com.bh. The normal schedule is on page 495, additional requirements on pages 500 and 502, and oil specifications on page 668. Do not automatically apply these figures to first-generation NX models or hybrids.

In brief. The NX 350 and NX 350h have different maintenance requirements. Identify the drivetrain first, then check the interval, oil and capacity for the fitted unit.

NX 350 and NX 350h: one letter matters

On the petrol model with mechanical all-wheel drive, the transfer unit sends drive towards the rear axle through a propeller shaft. It has its own oil fill. Servicing automatic transmission fluid therefore does not service the transfer case, even if both jobs take place during the same visit.

  • NX 350 AWD: the quote should list the transfer case and rear differential separately.
  • NX 250: front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions exist. Confirm the vehicle specification rather than relying on the model name alone.
  • NX 350h AWD: a separate electric motor drives the rear wheels. Applying the petrol NX transfer case service to it would be incorrect.

What to check on a hybrid

The lineup description on pressroom.lexus.com specifically explains that the NX 350h uses a rear electric motor instead of transfer gears and a rear driveshaft. This does not mean its hybrid drivetrain has no fluid requirements. For the NX 350h and plug-in hybrid NX 450h+, establish the correct component and service list using the VIN.

Understanding the maintenance interval

The normal schedule specifies transfer oil inspection every 20,000 km or 12 months and replacement every 40,000 km or 48 months. I means inspection, with correction or replacement as necessary. R identifies scheduled replacement. The shorter 20,000 km or 24-month replacement interval applies to the following conditions:

  • Predominant operation with a heavy load; the manual gives use of a roof-mounted carrier as an example.
  • Continuous driving for over two hours at 80% or more of the vehicle’s maximum speed. This is the document’s definition of a condition, not advice on driving speed.

Additional requirements differ by component. Dusty roads or traffic do not justify taking any shortened interval from the engine section and assigning it to the transfer case.

For low annual mileage, track elapsed time. A calendar-based inspection does not disappear simply because the vehicle has not reached 20,000 km. A service invoice should confirm the date and mileage of previous work.

Important. Floodwater exposure or an underbody impact warrants inspection regardless of the service date. Contamination and leakage require investigation, not just fresh oil.

Which oil belongs in the transfer case?

Page 668 of the selected manual, under Transfer (AWD), lists the following figures. Use them to agree on the product with the workshop, while confirming that the specification applies to the actual vehicle.

Transfer case parameterSelected manual’s specification
OilToyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT 75W-85 or equivalent
Reference capacity0.45 L

The manufacturer identifies the capacity as a reference quantity. Replacement requires the filling and level-setting procedure for the fitted unit; do not simply empty the entire purchased container into it.

Transfer case and rear differential: separate fills

The same page lists 0.50 L and the same oil type for the rear differential. This is neither an extra quantity for the transfer case nor a shared system capacity. If both components are being serviced, the work order should contain two separate entries.

For an alternative, verify the complete requirement for Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT 75W-85. Matching viscosity or a “for Lexus” label alone is insufficient. Ask for the product’s technical information confirming suitability in place of the specified oil.

Do not substitute ATF or CVT fluid for transfer case oil. Do not copy capacities from a Lexus RX, an earlier NX 200t or a hybrid NX because their names are similar. Identify the generation and component before selecting the fluid and quantity.

What the workshop should record

A pre-service inspection should cover the housing, seals and plugs. If oil is visible on an underbody panel, locate its source: it may have come from another component. Topping up without repairing a leak does not address the cause of oil loss.

  • The exact product, completed operation, date and vehicle mileage.
  • Seal condition and level verification using the correct procedure; plug tightening to the requirements for the fitted unit.
  • Any unusual contamination or water found in the oil. Dark colour alone does not establish the cause of a fault.

When not to wait for scheduled service

Owner checklist

☐ Confirm the NX generation, model year and VIN.

☐ Distinguish the petrol and hybrid versions.

☐ Verify FWD or the type of all-wheel drive.

☐ Find the applicable transfer case schedule.

☐ Consider mileage and elapsed time.

☐ Describe heavy loading and other operating conditions.

☐ Agree on the oil and reference capacity.

☐ List transfer case and rear differential work separately.

☐ Keep detailed service records.

Common mistakes

  • Applying the NX 350 transfer case schedule to an NX 350h.
  • Mixing up transfer case and rear differential capacities.
  • Tracking mileage while overlooking elapsed months.
  • Treating fresh oil as a cure for any humming noise without diagnosis.

Conclusion

For the selected NX 350 AWD, the starting point is replacement at 40,000 km or 48 months, reduced to 20,000 km or 24 months under the listed demanding conditions. Inspection is due earlier. Before booking, verify the version, applicable manual and separate work required for each component.

When browsing current offers for the Lexus NX, ask about drivetrain maintenance as well as equipment. Detailed records help establish which fluids were changed and when the next service is due.
