Illustration for this article. Vehicle and service parts are illustrative; select the oil and filter for the specific engine.

An oil change on a Range Rover starts with identifying the vehicle. The name covers different generations, petrol and diesel engines, and plug-in hybrids. A single oil recommendation and mileage interval cannot cover them all. The correct specification, elapsed time, driving conditions and vehicle messages all matter.

This article concerns the full-size Range Rover. Advice for the Range Rover Sport, Velar or Evoque should not automatically be applied to it. Here is how to establish the service interval, select the appropriate supplies and respond when the oil level changes or the previous maintenance history is unclear.

How often the oil needs changing

The UAE servicing section at rangerover.com states a scheduled service interval of 13,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. This is a useful local reference, rather than a universal oil-change schedule for every Range Rover ever built. Check the oil and filter requirements against the documentation and service programme for the individual vehicle.

Where the applicable schedule requires annual servicing, low mileage does not cancel the time limit. A vehicle that has covered only a few thousand kilometres during the year does not automatically qualify for another year before an oil change. Conversely, intensive use may bring the mileage limit around well before the anniversary of the last service.

The manufacturer's explanation of Flexible Service says that the system calculates when servicing is due using driving style and operating conditions. If your vehicle uses this calculation and requests servicing earlier than expected, do not dismiss the message because it has not yet covered 13,000 km. Ask the workshop to establish what is due and why.

Important. Check elapsed time, distance since the last oil change and the service message together. The absence of a reminder is not proof of recent maintenance: the indicator may have been reset without the work being carried out.

When driving conditions call for closer attention

Extended idling, repeated short journeys and driving under heavy load are not fully represented by the odometer. Several short trips with long stops and a continuous motorway journey can produce the same weekly mileage while placing the engine in very different operating conditions.

The manufacturer's regular maintenance guidance highlights arduous conditions, including dusty, wet and muddy terrain. If your Range Rover regularly experiences these conditions, discuss the appropriate maintenance schedule with the workshop. Mention towing and sustained heavy loads when agreeing the schedule as well. Describe how the vehicle is used, rather than providing only its current mileage.

An automatic recommendation to change every Range Rover's oil at 5,000 or 7,000 km would also be misleading. A shorter interval may be an individual decision agreed with a specialist, but it should not be presented as a single manufacturer requirement. Record the agreed schedule on the service paperwork and count from the oil change that was actually performed.

Choosing the right oil for the engine

The Range Rover name, engine capacity and the words “fully synthetic” are not enough to select an oil. Establish the model year, engine and original market, then check the SAE viscosity and complete manufacturer specification. The official documentation selector by VIN helps identify information for the relevant vehicle configuration.

Viscosity and manufacturer specification answer different questions. For example, 0W-20 on a container does not, by itself, demonstrate suitability for a particular engine. The required specification should appear in the product's technical information and appropriate labelling. A seller's statement that an oil is suitable for all Land Rovers is not an adequate substitute.

Take particular care when comparing service kits across generations. Having a V8 does not guarantee identical supplies, and similar power designations on vehicles of different ages do not establish that their engines share the same design. Do not order a kit solely from a photograph of another vehicle or the appearance of its filter.

Hot weather alone is not a reason to move to a thicker oil. Any permitted alternative should be established from the handbook and current information for the engine. If a workshop recommends departing from the specified oil, ask for the reason and have it recorded on the service documentation.

Oil quantity and filter replacement

The quantity required depends on the engine and the service procedure. Distinguish a normal oil change with a replacement filter from the capacity of a completely dry system after repair. A figure found in an online table may describe a different operation or another version of the vehicle.

Before booking, ask for an estimate that identifies the oil product, specification, quantity, filter part number and any required seals. Compare it with the final invoice after the work. A line reading “engine oil package” does not let you verify what was used or why that quantity was chosen.

A replacement filter belongs in an oil service. The manufacturer's servicing information describes an oil and filter change as a combined operation. Select the filter element and seals for the engine, then establish the final oil level using the vehicle's specified procedure. The aim is the correct level, rather than emptying every container that has been purchased.

Before the workshop visit. Provide the VIN, current mileage and date of the last oil change. Ask the workshop to confirm the full oil specification, filter part number and quantity for an oil change with a new filter. These details are more useful than a general promise to use premium supplies.

Checking the engine oil level

The checking method depends on the Range Rover's engine and model year. Where electronic measurement is provided, follow the handbook's requirements for vehicle position, temperature and the sequence of operations. Another generation may use a different procedure. Find the section on checking the engine oil level in the documentation for your own vehicle.

  1. Park on level ground and consult the instructions for your version. Do not assume that the waiting period or temperature requirements for another engine apply.
  1. Meet the measurement conditions and read the result together with the accompanying message. An unavailable reading does not, by itself, mean the engine needs more oil.
  1. If topping up is required, use oil of the correct specification and the quantity prescribed for that message. Do not add a whole container as a precaution.
  1. Repeat the check as instructed. If the message persists, measurement fails or the system reports an overfill, seek workshop assistance.

Record the date, mileage and quantity whenever oil is added. This makes it easier to distinguish a one-off correction after servicing from a continuing fall in level. A sudden change, evidence of a leak or increasingly frequent top-ups requires investigation. There is no responsible way to assign a universal acceptable oil-consumption figure without identifying the engine.

Oil level and oil pressure are different warnings

A service reminder indicates that maintenance is required. An oil-level reading concerns the amount of oil. A low-pressure warning concerns the operation of the lubrication system and requires a different response. These messages are not interchangeable, and resetting an indicator does not address their causes.

The manufacturer's low oil pressure guidance instructs the driver to stop safely, switch off the engine and seek qualified assistance. Do not continue to a more convenient workshop or raise the engine speed to see whether the warning disappears. A normal oil level does not rule out a pressure-related problem.

Respond without delay. If a low oil pressure warning appears, first stop safely and switch off the engine. Checking the level or adding oil does not replace establishing the cause. Do not resume driving until you have received appropriate professional guidance.

What plug-in hybrid owners should consider

Electric driving does not remove a plug-in hybrid's combustion engine or its maintenance requirements. Its own service schedule still applies, including the relevant time limits. Do not calculate an oil-change interval solely from your estimate of how many kilometres were covered with the petrol engine running.

When booking, identify the vehicle as a hybrid and provide its VIN. Do not use an oil-measurement procedure or service-reset sequence from a similar-looking non-hybrid without checking that it applies. High-voltage work is outside the scope of an ordinary owner oil-level check.

Checking maintenance before buying a used Range Rover

A consistent oil-service history matters when buying a used vehicle. When comparing current offers, look beyond mileage and equipment to the evidence of maintenance. Request documents showing dates, odometer readings, oil specification and the work performed. A claim that servicing was always on time leaves important questions unanswered without supporting records.

The manufacturer's Online Service History is available for vehicles built from July 2013 onwards. Ask the seller for the available records and compare them with invoices. If a particular job is absent from the electronic record, request supporting paperwork rather than automatically assuming that it was never performed.

An oil change immediately before sale can be useful, but it cannot reconstruct the preceding years. If there is no reliable history, plan an inspection and diagnosis followed by agreed maintenance. An existing pressure warning, leak or other fault needs investigation; a precautionary oil change alone does not resolve it.

Questions owners often ask

Can topping up replace an oil change

No. Topping up restores the level but does not complete the maintenance procedure or replace the filter. Keep the original next-service deadline unless the workshop has established a different, justified schedule. Repeated top-ups are also a reason to keep a record and discuss the underlying cause with a specialist.

Does the oil need changing immediately after purchase

If a reliable recent invoice confirms that the correct supplies were used, a change of owner alone does not normally make another oil change the necessary first step. If the date, mileage or specification is unknown, arranging baseline servicing after inspection is sensible. A reset service counter is not documentary evidence.

Can the oil colour tell me when to change it

Colour cannot replace the service schedule or diagnosis. Darkening alone does not reliably establish remaining service life or product quality. For routine planning, use the confirmed change date, mileage, operating conditions and vehicle requirements. If a fault is suspected, rely on an appropriate inspection.

Checklist before an oil change

☐ Confirm the VIN, model year, engine and original market.

☐ Check the last change date, distance covered and service messages.

☐ Agree the correct viscosity and complete oil specification.

☐ Confirm the filter, seals and quantity for the service procedure.

☐ Check the final oil level and inspect for leaks after the work.

☐ Keep the invoice and record when the next service is due.

Conclusion

A sound Range Rover oil-service routine combines accurate oil selection, timely filter replacement and the correct level-checking procedure. The local reference of 13,000 km or 12 months helps with planning, but the individual vehicle's schedule and operating conditions determine what is required. Keeping the paperwork makes that history verifiable for both the current owner and a future buyer.
