The interior is upholstered with black vinyl with plaid cloth seating surfaces, a Gene Berg shifter, VDO gauges, tinted glass and a barefoot accelerator pedal. The 4-speed manual transmission is paired with a 4-cylinder engine fed by dual carburetors. With the success of the Type I, or Beetle, Volkswagen decided to build a Type II, or small van, that would become known as the Bus. Using much of the Type I’s belly pan and running gear, the van body came in various forms from multi-window people carriers to stoic panel vans ready to haul cargo. It was also offered as a pickup with a multitude of cab configurations. One of the most ingenious design features of the Pickup was the dropdown side walls, which allowed for easier loading and unloading of cargo onto the bed. An excellent option for various light-duty projects, the pickups proved infinitely popular with local handymen and gardeners, as well as painters and electricians. As is often the case, many of these fell victim to extensive use and abuse and were seen simply as a tool to get a job done, receiving minimal care during their service life.
