The original—which was in production for just two years—featured a combination of LT1 solid-lifter small-block power, a beefy drivetrain and racing-grade suspension and brakes. The second, which arrived in 1990 and remained in production until 1995, was defined by its incredibly expensive powerplant: a 32-valve alloy double-overhead-cam V-8—the first non-pushrod engine in the marque’s history—designed in concert with Lotus Cars of England and built by Mercury Marine in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The third ZR1, introduced in 2009, was the first Corvette built with a factory supercharger, multiple carbon fiber body panels and carbon-ceramic Brembo disc brakes. At 638 HP, it was the most powerful car ever built by GM. The fourth-generation ZR1 arrived in 2019, more powerful, more capable, more balanced and more outrageous than ever before. The Silver-Backed Gorilla derivative of the already powerful Z06, the new ZR1 packs the most punch of any Corvette thanks to its supercharged 6.2L all-aluminum dry-sump V-8 engine, which pumps out 755 HP and 715 lb-ft of torque. Its Eaton blower’s 2.7L displacement outdoes the Z06 by 52%, its size necessitating an opening in the domed hood to accommodate its bulging carbon fiber cover.
