Do not select RAV4 spark plugs from the model name or engine capacity alone. Common fifth-generation XA50 powertrains include the 2.0-litre M20A-FKS petrol engine, the 2.5-litre A25A-FKS petrol engine and the 2.5-litre A25A-FXS hybrid engine. Each is a four-cylinder unit with four spark plugs, but the part specification depends on engine code, model year and original destination.

Important. This guide primarily covers the 2019–2025 RAV4 XA50. Check the VIN, model code, engine code and vehicle-specific manual before servicing a 2026 model, an imported vehicle or another generation. The petrol and hybrid versions discussed here do not use glow plugs.

Why a RAV4 Hybrid Still Uses Spark Plugs

A petrol engine relies on an electrical spark to ignite the compressed air-fuel charge. A glow plug serves a different purpose: it heats a diesel combustion chamber for starting and initial operation. The M20A-FKS, A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS are spark-ignition engines, so they have no glow-plug preheating system.

A RAV4 Hybrid can move away under electric power and start its petrol engine only when required. Every engine restart still needs a stable spark at all four plugs. Electric assistance can soften an early misfire symptom, which is why the complaint may appear intermittent.

When to Inspect the Plugs Early

Electrode wear raises the voltage needed to bridge the gap. An engine may still idle smoothly, yet misfire when cylinder pressure rises under load. The first symptom can therefore appear during overtaking, a steep climb or a journey with heavy cargo.

Petrol RAV4 warning signs

  • an uneven cold start, body shake or unstable idle;
  • hesitation or a brief loss of power during overtaking, climbing or firm throttle input;
  • P0300 or a cylinder-specific P0301–P0304 code stored by the ECM;
  • fuel use increases even though the route, payload and tyre pressures are unchanged;
  • an unburned-fuel smell or a flashing Check Engine lamp while the vehicle vibrates.

Hybrid RAV4 warning signs

  • the petrol engine joins in with a sharper thump or vibration than usual;
  • the transition from electric drive to combined operation becomes noticeable;
  • the petrol engine starts more often or stays on for longer;
  • misfire appears immediately after an automatic engine restart or a high-power request;
  • fuel use rises and misfire codes remain stored even though some journeys feel normal.

These signs do not prove that the plugs are worn. A coil, boot, injector, intake leak, fuel-pressure fault, intake contamination or low compression can produce the same complaint. Hybrid diagnosis also considers the exact restart conditions and the state of the 12-volt supply.

How the RAV4 Ignition System Works

Each plug sits below an individual ignition coil. The ECM controls spark timing and coil dwell, then uses crankshaft-speed variation to compare cylinder contribution. Repeatedly low contribution can set a random or cylinder-specific misfire code.

As the electrodes erode, the gap widens. High voltage may then leak through a coil boot or track across a contaminated insulator instead of firing across the plug gap. For that reason, plugs and coils should be inspected as a system and compared by cylinder.

Conditions That Shorten Spark Plug Life

  • continued operation with an excessively rich or lean mixture;
  • engine oil, coolant or excess fuel entering the combustion chamber;
  • an incorrect heat range, reach, seat design or resistance value;
  • a leaking coil boot, damaged connector, moisture or oil in a plug well;
  • journeys too short for the engine and combustion chambers to reach normal temperature;
  • sand or dust left around the coils during service.

Cleanliness matters when a RAV4 is used on dusty roads. Remove loose debris before lifting a coil and inspect the well again before loosening the plug. Particles must not enter the cylinder or strike the ceramic insulator.

Consequences of Delayed Replacement

  1. A widening gap increases electrical stress on the coil and insulation.
  1. A load-related misfire can eventually persist when the engine is idling.
  1. Unburned fuel reaches the exhaust and can overheat the catalytic converter.
  1. Fuel use and emissions rise while acceleration becomes less consistent.
  1. A hybrid develops rougher automatic petrol-engine restarts.
  1. New plugs cannot repair an injector, wiring, coil or mechanical cylinder fault.

Critical warning. If the Check Engine lamp flashes together with shaking and power loss, ease off immediately and pull over where it is safe. Driving with severe misfire can overheat the catalyst. Apply Toyota's high-voltage safety instructions before working on a hybrid.

Toyota RAV4 Service Guidance and Specifications

The official 2025 petrol RAV4 manual for the A25A-FKS and the separate hybrid manual for the A25A-FXS both specify DENSO FC16HR-Q8 plugs with a nominal 0.8 mm gap. Toyota requires iridium-tipped plugs and states that their gap must not be adjusted.

The North American maintenance schedule for this generation lists replacement at 120,000 miles or 144 months in the Service book. Treat that interval as destination-specific. The correct regional schedule, operating conditions and documented history of the vehicle take priority.

EngineQuantityDesignationGapApplication
A25A-FKS 2.5, 2025 RAV44DENSO FC16HR-Q80.8 mmOfficial specification; do not adjust the gap
A25A-FXS 2.5 Hybrid, 20254DENSO FC16HR-Q80.8 mmConfirmed in the separate hybrid manual
M20A-FKS 2.04Confirm by VIN and manualSee manualDo not apply A25A data without verification

How to Use the Table

  • Identify the engine code before searching for a plug specification.
  • Do not select a set only from 2.0 or 2.5 engine capacity and registration year.
  • Treat the A25A-FKS and A25A-FXS data as confirmed only for the cited manual versions.
  • Do not bend a fine iridium electrode to alter its gap.
  • Measure the service interval from the last documented replacement, not only total mileage.

Selecting the Correct Set

A matching thread diameter does not establish compatibility. Thread reach, seat design, heat range, internal resistance, electrode construction and terminal form must also match. Use a VIN-linked catalogue to confirm the part number, then read the marking on each plug before fitting it.

Checking a Used RAV4

A credible replacement record includes the date, mileage, installed part number and workshop invoice. Current offers are best compared alongside service history: low mileage does not show that the plugs match the engine or that an earlier misfire was diagnosed correctly.

What a Removed Plug Can Indicate

Visual inspection is useful only when combined with codes, freeze-frame data and the conditions that produced the complaint. One insulator colour is not a complete diagnosis.

Diagnosing Ignition Misfire

Save DTCs and freeze-frame data before removing parts. Match the code to the driving condition, compare cylinders and replace parts only after the evidence identifies a likely cause.

Version and symptomPossible plug connectionOther causesFirst action
A25A-FKS: hesitation under loadA wide gap can lose the spark at high pressureCoil, injector, fuel supply, intake leakSave DTCs and test the cylinder by Toyota procedure
A25A-FXS: vibration at engine restartOne plug may ignite inconsistently after a stopMount, injector, throttle, compressionMatch misfire counters to the restart event
M20A-FKS: one-cylinder P030XWear, a crack or insulator tracking is possibleCoil, wiring, injector, engine mechanicsCompare the plug and coil with a healthy cylinder
Any version: P0300General wear across the set is possibleFuel quality, mixture, pressure, intake leakReview freeze frame and fuel trims

Diagnostic Sequence

  • Read and record every DTC and its freeze-frame record before erasing fault memory.
  • Record temperature, engine speed, load and the exact moment of the symptom.
  • Inspect connectors, coil supply, housings and rubber boots.
  • Label each removed plug by cylinder before comparing the set.
  • If swapping the plug or coil does not move the fault, continue with injector, intake-leak and compression tests.
  • After repair, clear memory, complete a controlled road test and scan the vehicle again.

Pre-Service Checklist

☐ Note the VIN, model designation, build year and engine identifier.

☐ Confirm quantity, designation, gap and interval in the vehicle documents.

☐ Capture fault codes and freeze-frame records before power is disconnected or memory is erased.

☐ Let the engine cool and remove sand from around the coils and wells.

☐ Prepare the correct socket and the tightening torque from the manual.

☐ Inspect coils, boots, connectors and wells for oil or moisture.

☐ After assembly, check that every connector is locked and the engine runs evenly.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ordering plugs from the phrase ‘RAV4 2.5’ without checking the engine code and VIN.
  • Applying the FC16HR-Q8 designation from an A25A engine to an M20A without documentation.
  • Using one destination's maintenance interval for a vehicle built to another specification.
  • Adjusting the gap on a fine iridium electrode.
  • Replacing the set during active misfire without testing coils, injectors, mixture and compression.
  • Erasing fault memory before documenting the original DTCs and operating conditions.
  • Leaving sand, oil or water in a well before loosening the plug.
  • Tightening a plug in a hot aluminium cylinder head without the specified procedure and torque.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spark Plugs

Does a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Have Spark Plugs

Yes. Electric drive can propel the vehicle, while four spark plugs ignite the charge whenever the A25A-FXS petrol engine runs.

Does a Petrol or Hybrid RAV4 Have Glow Plugs

No. Glow plugs are used in diesel engines. The M20A and A25A engines discussed here use spark ignition.

Are the 2.0 and 2.5 Litre Spark Plugs the Same

Do not assume that they are interchangeable because they look similar. Confirm M20A and A25A catalogue numbers separately against the VIN and manual.

Should All Four Plugs Be Replaced Together

Routine service normally replaces the full set. If one nearly new plug fails, diagnose the cause of its damage or contamination before fitting another.

Can the FC16HR Q8 Gap Be Adjusted

No. Toyota specifies a nominal 0.8 mm gap and explicitly states that the iridium plug gap must not be adjusted.

Does P0301 Always Mean a Faulty Spark Plug

No. The code identifies a misfiring cylinder, but a coil, injector, wiring defect, intake leak or mechanical fault may be responsible.

Does the 120000 Mile Interval Apply to Every RAV4

No. It belongs to a particular North American schedule. Use the documentation for the vehicle's VIN and original destination.

Conclusion

A RAV4 XA50 has four spark plugs, but their specification must follow the engine code, VIN and destination-specific manual. Toyota specifies DENSO FC16HR-Q8 with a non-adjustable 0.8 mm gap for the 2025 A25A-FKS petrol engine and A25A-FXS hybrid engine. Do not transfer those details to a 2.0-litre M20A-FKS without confirmation. When misfire occurs, save the fault conditions and test the plug together with the coil, injector, mixture and compression.
