The Volkswagen Type 2, or Bus as it’s more commonly known in the U.S., is one of the most popular, recognizable vans the world has ever known. In particular, the Bus seems to have a special place in the hearts of Americans and Britons, forged as the transport mode preferred by hippies and free spirits emerging in the 1960s through the early 1970s. Efficient, roomy and seemingly infinitely customizable, the Bus was really a great option for nearly anyone. In 1950, Volkswagen began sending Busses to Westfalia Werke in Rheda-Wiedenbruck, a dual community in the valley of the Ems River in the Westphalian Lowland for conversion into camping-friendly vehicles.
It’s been said that only about 1,000 Westfalia conversions were built between 1950 and 1958. As the Westfalia gained interest and even a following, more and more options and amenities were available, turning them into mini motorhomes. This 1973 Westfalia Camper is certainly of that school. Finished in era-popular orange with white bumpers, steel wheels and the pop-top Westfalia roof, the VW is believed to have only traveled 38,500 miles from new. Powered by an air-cooled 1679cc flat 4-cylinder engine and a 4-speed manual transmission, the Camper is ready to go, complete with side curtains, a folding Z bed and jump seat, jalousie windows, a side cooking table and more.
Simulated wood paneling and proper bordering abounds within, an absolute throwback to the era. Of course, the pop-top roof provides a dose of spaciousness and an airy nature that bodes too well with the outdoors set. Drivers are given vehicle vitals by way of VDO instruments nestled into the camera case black dashboard. Upholstered in tan vinyl, front seat passengers enjoy the early style low-back bucket seats and the Volkswagen rolls on white-stripe tires, flat VW-script bright hubcaps complementing the look.
